Match Preview

Davies back for Spireites Chesterfield hope to have leading scorer Craig Davies back in the ranks for the visit of FA Cup giant-killers Stevenage. The 15-goal striker missed the 3-2 victory at Southend through illness, but looks set to come back in against Borough. Jack Hunt`s return to Huddersfield after his loan spell leaves boss John Sheridan with a right-back problem given that Kelvin Lomax is out with an ankle injury and Dan Gray is away on loan at Macclesfield. Jamie Lowry could come into the reckoning 15 months after his last first-team appearance. He has recently stepped up his recovery from a serious knee injury, but Sheridan would like him to complete a few more reserve-team games before making a full-scale comeback. Centre-back Simon Ford has played a few games at right-back, while left-back Scott Griffiths could be asked to switch sides. Stevenage travel north without Lee Boylan. The 32-year-old striker left the club after his contract expired, having been restricted to just two appearances this season due to injury. Defender Darius Charles is available having served the final game of a three-match ban in the sensational FA Cup victory over Newcastle. Striker Byron Harrison is also in contention having been cup-tied against the Magpies. The recent signing from Carshalton could partner Peter Winn, who returned from an ankle injury to score the last goal of the 3-1 upset. Midfielders Joel Byrom (ankle) and Darren Murphy (foot) will hope to be in contention for the trip to Derbyshire after shaking off recent injuries. Scott Laird should be fit to play, despite being attacked on the pitch during the aftermath of the cup win, which has seen a 24-year-old male charged with assault.

Match Report

Cup glory forgotten for fallen Stevenage Stevenage came back to earth after their FA Cup triumph over Newcastle when a Drew Talbot goal gave Chesterfield a 1-0 victory. Talbot struck just before half time but the League Two leaders had to withstand sustained second half pressure before celebrating another win. A strong wind dominated the first half and chances were scare until Michael Bostwick had a 25-yard shot turned behind by Tommy Lee in the 33rd minute. Craig Davies was foiled by Chris Day four minutes later but the Stevenage goalkeeper was beaten in the 42nd minute when Talbot's 20-yard shot crept inside a post. Stevenage took the game to Chesterfield in the second half and only some desperate defending kept the visitors out. Chris Beardsley forced Lee into a full length save and Darius Charles just failed to connect with a low cross from Lawrie Wilson. But Deane Smalley should have settled it when Day's poor kick set him up but a heavy touch allowed the keeper to recover.
