Match Preview

Breckin back in the fold Ian Breckin could return to the Chesterfield squad when the run-away league leaders host Northampton. The experienced centre-half missed the victories against Wycombe and Cheltenham through illness. However, a makeshift defence, with Scott Griffiths at centre-half and Derek Niven at full-back, impressed in both matches. Boss John Sheridan made only one change from the 4-1 win over Wycombe, with Kieran Djilali coming into the team at Cheltenham in place of Jack Lester. Sheridan`s policy of playing Lester in Chesterfield`s games at the b2net Stadium is likely to see the veteran striker return to the starting XI. Mark Allott made his return from an ankle injury as a late substitute during the 3-0 win at Cheltenham and the midfielder could be included once more. New Northampton manager Gary Johnson will be without striker Billy McKay. McKay dislocated his elbow during the 3-2 defeat to Shrewsbury on Saturday and is beginning an absence which could run into several weeks. Fellow frontman Leon McKenzie is also out with his nagging knee injury so captain Andy Holt could again be asked to fill in up front. Former Coventry duo Marcus Hall and Kevin Thornton missed out at the weekend through illness but took part in Johnson`s first training session on Monday morning. Goalkeeper Steve Collis, right-back Seth Nana Ofori-Twumasi and left-back Jamie Reckord are all in contention after joining the Cobblers on loan on Monday. Defender Craig Hinton has had an injection in a long-standing knee injury and will be out for around a month. Midfielder Ryan Gilligan has returned from his loan at Torquay a week early after suffering a family bereavement but cannot play until the Macclesfield game on March 12.

Match Report

Spireites continue title march Chesterfield's prolific strikeforce of Craig Davies and Jack Lester fired the runaway League Two leaders to a 2-1 home victory over Northampton. Davies notched his 21st goal and Lester bagged his 11th of the season before John Johnson headed a late reply for Gary Johnson`s visitors. The Spireites threatened to brush Town aside in the opening minutes but top scorer Davies somehow missed an open goal, firing over an empty net from four yards. A great block on the line from Johnson stopped Danny Whitaker from putting the home side ahead in the 13th minute, although the Cobblers recovered to end the half on top. Kevin Thornton sliced a shot wide from a good position and Northampton started the second half confidently before Chesterfield struck in the 64th minute. Lester slipped past three challenges to fire in a low shot which Chris Dunn could only parry into the patch of Davies who made no mistake. Lester himself then got in on the act as he smashed in a second in the 69th minute, leaving Johnson`s 82nd-minute header from a corner merely consolation.
