Match Report

Rene Howe was Morecambe's late goal hero as he scored his third goal of the season five minutes from time to earn his side a point.

The on-loan Peterborough United man's effort earned his side their fifth draw in the last six games.

In a game played in atrocious conditions a draw was probably a fair result but Chesterfield would have been unhappy at not picking up their first win in four games after three successive defeats.

The visitors had a chance in the first few seconds when keeper Trevor Carson's punt upfield bounced over Jim Bentley on the slippery surface and fell for the normally lethal Jack Lester who dragged his first-time volley wide.

But it was the home side that took the lead after just five minutes when a good passing move saw Stewart Drummond make the most of a poor clearance to curl a fine effort past Carson's left hand and into the corner of the Chesterfield net.

Morecambe looked to be adapting better to the conditions but they were caught napping after 15 minutes when Darren Currie's deep cross found Gregor Robertson unmarked at the back post and the left-back volleyed past former Spireites keeper Barry Roche.

Five minutes later the visitors took the lead when Lester's trickery proved too much for Bentley who fouled him in the box. Lester's strike partner Jamie Ward converted to make it 2-1 to the visitors and change the complexion of the game.

The visitors always looked the more threatening in the first half but when the teams changed round and Morecambe had the wind at their backs they took charge.

Garry Hunter wasted an early chance to draw them level when he volleyed over from the edge of the area and Drummond headed wide at the far post.

Michael Twiss fired a stinging left-foot shot just wide before Chesterfield threatened themselves when Ward's long-range free-kick was saved by the legs of Roche.

Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy used his last card when he brought on teenager Aaron Taylor for his first appearance for Morecambe in the league when he replaced Twiss on 79 minutes.

And the Morecambe-born striker was in the thick of the action straightaway when he looked to have been fouled in the box. But he wasn't to be down for long as, with five minutes to go, he popped up in the box to flick Wayne Curtis' throw-in against a post before Howe bundled the rebound into the net to make it 2-2.

Both teams had late chances to win the game with Bentley diverting Howe's header inches wide for the home side while at the other end Lester went close twice in the final few minutes with fine efforts.
