Match Preview

Spireites and Gills crave points for contrasting reasons Derek Niven is doubtful for Chesterfield`s big clash at home to Gillingham but Dean Morgan could return. Midfielder Niven will be assessed having been forced off in the 53rd minute of last Friday`s goalless draw at Torquay with a jarred ankle. Forward Morgan, meanwhile, missed the Plainmoor encounter altogether with a thigh strain but is hoping to return for the final day clash at a sold-out b2net Stadium. Fit-again defender Simon Ford returned to enjoy a starting role in what was his first match in over two months against the Gulls and he has not suffered any ill-effects. The Spireites go into the game knowing just a point will be enough to get their hands on the League Two title while second-placed Bury must win at Stevenage to have any chance at all of overtaking John Sheridan`s side at the summit. Gills will be without defensive duo Barry Fuller and Josh Gowling. The Gills must avoid defeat against the Spireites to have any real hope of making the play-offs, but they are hampered by being without skipper Fuller who suffered a bruised knee against Macclesfield last week. Centre-half Gowling remains sidelined with the ankle problem that has seen him miss the last two matches but he, along with Fuller, could return should the Gills secure a place in the end of season finale. Meanwhile, defender Simon King is a doubt after being replaced at half-time against the Silkmen with a tight hamstring, while veteran midfielder Kevin Maher is struggling with a virus. Winger Andy Barcham (hamstring) and midfielder Curtis Weston (knee) face late fitness tests, while Mark Bentley should be fit despite a bruised back. Should Andy Hessenthaler's men better a result attained by either Stevenage or Torquay, who play Bury and Rotherham respectively, they will secure a play-off spot.

Match Report

Spireites celebrations leave Gills feeling flat Chesterfield clinched the League Two championship with a 3-1 victory which denied Gillingham a play-off place. John Sheridan`s side went into the clash knowing a solitary point would be enough to secure the title but they claimed all three at the b2net Stadium to deservedly seal top spot, with second-placed Bury drawing 3-3 at Stevenage. For the Gills, it was a case of so near, so far as they finished in eight spot, narrowly outside the play-off place by virtue of goal difference. Danny Whitaker's 15th of the season put the home side ahead and although Cody McDonald replied, Jack Lester and Deane Smalley pounced late on to seal an impressive second-half display. Chesterfield had created little in a nervy first half apart from a 20-yard shot from Whitaker which flashed just wide. And it needed a sharp save from Tommy Lee to deny Cody McDonald in the 35th minute. But the home side got the breakthrough they craved in the 54th minute when hesitation in the Gillingham defence allowed Whitaker to take the ball round Alan Julian and score from a tight angle. Lee made another good save to keep out a Danny Jackman drive in the 65th minute, but shortly afterwards Adebayo Akinfenwa put McDonald in on the right and he forced the ball in off the keeper for his 25th of the season. Gillingham looked the more dangerous team but 13 minutes from time Lester turned in a Scott Griffiths cross from the left, and the full-back then set up Smalley five minutes later for the goal that cranked up the celebrations.
