Late show specialists Chester finally killed off struggling Torquay with Ryan Lowe's stoppage time goal, but it was no more than they deserved after a powerful second-half display. City had scored twice in the last two minutes to snatch a 4-4 draw with Darlington on Saturday. They left it until the third minute of stoppage time before Lowe pounced after Michael Branch headed Gregg Blundell's cross against the bar. It was cruel luck on Torquay goalkeeper Andy Marriott, whose brilliant performance was all that stood between Chester and a thumping victory. Marriott pulled off at least eight top drawer saves in the face of mounting pressure and was given a standing ovation at the final whistle. Torquay fans booed the rest of their team off. Chester had two goals, by Phill Bolland and Branch, disallowed, while Torquay also had a Steve Woods header chalked off for offside. But Chester goalkeeper Chris MacKenzie had only one save to make in 90 minutes, while Marriott was in almost constant action. City were inspired by a livewire display from Ben Davies, who flitted effectively from midfield to the right wing and he delivered a stream of dangerous set-piece kicks for good measure. Punchless Torquay thought they had survived Chester's second-half onslaught until Lowe scored, and even then Marriott nearly clawed Branch's header to safety. The result leaves Chester still unbeaten in five games two wins and three draws and manager Keith Curle had the luxury of leaving £105,000 striker Blundell and leading scorer Lowe on the bench. Relegated Torquay have only two points from their first six games and Leroy Rosenior, who led them to automatic promotion two years ago, is under growing pressure to stop the rot.
