Match Report

Stockport County soaked up a barrage of pressure to secure yet another point at Edgeley Park in a goalless draw with Chester City - their fifth draw of the season.

Chester dominated proceedings in the first 45 minutes, but the home side so nearly masterminded a smash-and-grab raid to steal all three points.

Stockport had just one chance in the first-half, and that came two minutes before the interval.

Chester were on top from the outset and came close to taking the lead after only three minutes. Ryan Lowe saw a shot cleared off the line by Stockport midfielder Danny Boshell, before striker Marcus Richardson had an effort cleared off the line by Rob Clare.

The visitors continued to press and in the 15th minute Carl Regan saw a shot charged down by Clare, and soon after Lowe shot wide after tricking County left-back Mark Robinson on the edge of the penalty area.

A cross from Ben Davies found Richardson midway through the first-half, but the striker saw his shot blocked by Robinson.

Gregg Blundell and Davies both had good chances to give Keith Curle's men the lead, but neither could find the back of the net.

The best chance came on the stroke of half-time. David Artell unleashed a fierce shot from the edge of the box, but County keeper Carl Ikeme denied him with a brilliant fingertip save after the ball had taken a wicked deflection off Damien Allen.

Matt Hamshaw had County's only chance of the opening 45 minutes, but his audacious 30-yard drive flew well over the crossbar.

Chester started the brighter in the second half and from a Lowe cross, Stockport defender Tony Vaughan nearly deflected the ball into his own net.

Three minutes later, in the 62nd minute, a Davies cross was met by a Richardson header, but the ball rebounded to safety off the left-hand post.

But then it was Stockport on the attack. Skipper Keith Briggs saw a sweet half-volley brilliantly saved by Chester keeper Chris McKenzie in the 69th minute, before a minute later Mark Robinson saw a 25-yard thunderbolt cannon off the angle of post and bar.

However, despite late pressure from both sides the scoreline remained goalless.
