Match Report

Rushden and Chester battled out a 1-1 draw which was probably a fair result on reflection of the play.

It was Rushden who started the better and David Bell was just wide after a good build up by the home side.

On five minutes Chris MacKenzie in the Chester goal failed to hold a Daniel Chillingworth shot but he recovered before Greg Pearson could pounce.

On 15 minutes Ben Davies brought a good save from Jamie Young after a fierce drive from the edge of the box.

Scott McNiven found himself clear on the right in the 20th minute and he tried to chip Young but the effort was inches wide. Rushden went close in the 28th minute when Bell shot inches wide from 20 yards.

A minute before the interval Diamonds had their best chance of the match when Daniel Chillingworth missed a golden opportunity when unmarked and free in front of goal he could only head wide.

Rushden again started well in the second half and Marcus Kelly made a fine run through the defence before releasing Bell who wastefully shot wide.

On 54 minutes McNiven saw his effort deflected just wide and a minute later Chester took the lead when David Artell knocked back Justin Walker's corner to the unmarked Ryan Lowe who shot home with the Rushden defence static.

Rushden equalised in the 61st minute when three minutes after coming on Chris O'Grady, who moved on loan from Leicester City this week made a dream debut when, after a good exchange between himself and Chillingworth he turned and shot home from 15 yards out to beat the helpless MacKenzie.

Both sides strived hard to score a winner and the nearest it came to that was when on 81 minutes Bell got onto the end of Rob Gier's cross but the ball went wide.
