Match Report

Classy striker John Murphy returned to haunt his former team-mates with a powerful finish to set Chester City on their way to yet another away win.

He gave Macclesfield's current crop of strikers a lesson in finishing when he rose above the central defence in the 11th minute to convert a Ritchie Partridge cross with a looping 15-yard header.

Even before then, Macclesfield had squandered two gift-wrapped chances.

In the sixth minute Levi Reid hoofed a 15-yard left-foot chance into the away support.

Moments later, Reid tried to make amends by delivering a neat cross along the six-yard line only for Francis Green to belt the ball over the bar from eight yards out.

Macclesfield continued to waste chances after they went a goal down with Green breaking past the backline in the 31st minute only to fire straight at John Danby from 15 yards.

They were made to pay in the 41st minute when Laurence Wilson scored one of the free-kicks of the season with a curling 30-yard effort that left Wilson flapping at thin air.

Macclesfield laid siege on the Chester goalmouth after the break and they were desperately unlucky not to score in the 47th minute when Danby flung out his legs to block a Danny Thomas volley.

Centre-back Luke Dimech then forced another fine save with an eight-yard header.

However, they finally earned a lifeline in the 53rd minute when former Manchester City youngster Terry Dunfield picked out the top corner with a powerful 20-yard free-kick.

But they were never going to score from open play and a series of chances went begging at the death.

In the 78th minute Martin Gritton neatly released Green but, from only 18 yards out, he side-footed a simple chance wide.

Then, with virtually the last kick of the game, Adam Murray poked a shot from the edge of the box against the crossbar as manager Ian Brightwell held his head in his hands.
