Match Report

Chester City picked up the vital point they needed to secure their league status and sent Mansfield Town down in the process.

City keeper John Danby was the hero with a string of superb saves to deny a Stockport County side, who put them under the cosh throughout the second half despite already having one eye on the forthcoming play-offs.

There had been little action in the first half aside from a chance on 41 minutes when John Murphy headed the ball back from the byline and Mark Hughes came in at the near post to head over the bar.

But the game sprung into life in the second period as County did their utmost to dig Mansfield out of their hole by laying siege to the Chester goal.

On 48 minutes, substitute Adam Proudlock turned well on the ball just inside the box only to see his effort blocked by the legs of Danby.

On 52 minutes, Proudlock again had a great chance when he was sent clear after a neat one-two with Anthony Pilkington only for his low effort to be blocked by the out-rushing keeper.

Chester had to endure some anxious moments as the second half wore on.

County skipper Gareth Owen headed an effort wide and Gary Dicker also nodded over the bar as the visitors looked the more likely winners.

Good claims for a penalty were waved away after Proudlock appeared to be brought down by Paul Linwood on 67 minutes.

Proudlock also shot into the side-netting and, with eight minutes remaining, Danby produced an unbelievable save to repel a point-blank header from Pilkington to ensure Chester picked up the point that they desperately needed.
