Match Report

Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford scored a first-half hat-trick as his side trounced Chester City in the Carling Cup first round tie at the Deva Stadium.

Chester, who had been looking to bounce back from their 6-0 drubbing at Dagenham & Redbridge at the weekend, fell behind to the first attack of the game on three minutes.

A long ball was played over the top by keeper Casper Ankergren and the Chester defence were static, allowing Beckford to ghost in unmarked and volley the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

The advantage was doubled seven minutes later when the visitors scored though Robert Snodgrass, who fired the ball home after being picked out from a cross from the left by Fabian Delph.

When it looked as though Chester were going to be overrun, they pulled a goal back in the 15th minute as Ryan Lowe pulled the trigger from the edge of the box and saw his shot deflect off defender Rui Marques and loop over Ankergren into the net.

But any hope the home side had was extinguished on 25 minutes as Beckford let fly with a vicious left-footed strike from 20 yards after a poor clearance from Paul Linwood went straight to the striker.

A fourth was added on 31 minutes as Snodgrass cut through the Chester defence and set up Andy Robinson, who curled the ball home.

Beckford completed his hat-trick on 35 minutes as Snodgrass again turned provider, picking out the big striker who hit a superb lob over keeper John Danby.

Leeds had several chances to extend their lead in the second period, notably when Enoch Showunmi was denied by a fine save by Danby and the sub also shot over when he had just the keeper to beat.

A late consolation was added 15 minutes from time as Lowe fired home from the spot after Damien Mozika had been felled in the box by Frazer Richardson.
