Match Preview

Robins boss ponders changes Cheltenham manager Mark Yates has threatened to wield the axe for the visit of Stevenage after watching his side roll over against Barnet last weekend. The Robins took the lead before going down 3-1 in disappointing fashion and no-one can be certain of their place at Whaddon Road. Strikers Wesley Thomas and Shaun Jeffers, the latter of whom started on the bench at Barnet, have recovered from knocks and are in contention for selection. However, midfielder Frankie Artus sustained a minor crack in his fibula at Underhill and could be out for a maximum of six weeks, although the club are hopeful it could in fact be around four. Defender Martin Riley (hamstring) also misses out for at least another week. Stevenage will be without midfielder Stacy Long. Long was sent off for two bookable offences in Boro's draw with Crewe last weekend and will serve a one-match suspension. Laurie Wilson, Peter Vincenti and Joel Byrom are all vying to replace Long, who boss Graham Westley felt was unfortunate to be dismissed. Striker Charlie Griffin came through the draw with the Railwaymen after being a doubt ahead of the game due to concussion and he is set to start once again. But fellow striker Chris Beardsley is out for six weeks with a dislocated shoulder and midfielder Darren Murphy also remains sidelined with a shoulder problem. Stevenage are unbeaten in their last three league matches and will be looking for their first away win of the season.

Match Report

Thomas continues hot streak In-form Wesley Thomas pounced to grab his sixth goal of the season and earn Cheltenham a third win of the season in a 1-0 victory over Stevenage. The striker's 69th-minute header came from a pinpoint cross by Shaun Jeffers after good work down the right by JJ Melligan and substitute Brian Smikle. Stevenage, who dominated much of the game but without creating many clear-cut chances, were denied an equaliser minutes later by a brilliant save from Scott Brown to keep out Yemi Obubade's diving header. Brown also pulled off a flying stop in the first half to keep out a Joel Byrom shot after a cleverly worked free-kick after 12 minutes. Thomas came close to adding a second in the 90th minute following another slide-rule pass by Jeffers but his shot cannoned off the bar and was cleared to safety. Midfielder Laurie Wilson, who had blazed over for Boro at the start of the second half, was sent off in stoppage time for a second bookable offence.
