Match Preview

Elliott out for Robins Cheltenham will be without defender Steve Elliott for their npower League Two clash with Bristol Rovers. Elliott is suffering with a calf strain and will not feature for the Robins in the local derby, with Keith Lowe likely to deputise at the heart of defence. Otherwise, manager Mark Yates has no injury or suspension concerns as Cheltenham take on Rovers knowing a victory could take them top of the table. Josh Low will be hoping for a recall against the club where he began his professional career, and the midfielder insists he and his team-mates are up for any challenge as they continue their quest for promotion. "There's nothing to scare us in this league and we just need to keep doing what we're doing," he told Press Association Sport. Matt Gill could make a return to the Bristol Rovers bench in new manager Mark McGhee's first game in charge. Midfielder Gill has not featured for Rovers since November 26 after undergoing a knee operation but came through 60 minutes for the club's reserve team in midweek and could be involved at Whaddon Road. Otherwise, McGhee will not be able to call on striker Matt Harrold, who could be out for up to two months with an ankle injury, while Mustapha Carayol has also been sidelined with a groin problem. Defender Adam Virgo (knee ligaments) and midfielder Wayne Brown (ankle) remain long-term absentees for the Pirates, as McGhee looks to start his reign with a victory over Rovers' West Country neighbours following his appointment as former boss Paul Buckle's successor on Wednesday.

Match Report

McGhee makes winning start Goals from Chris Zebroski and Eliot Richards gave Bristol Rovers a 2-0 victory at Cheltenham and got Mark McGhee's reign as manager off to the perfect start. Rovers took a firm grip on the game with a two-goal burst in four minutes either side of the hour mark. Zebroski opened the scoring when he latched onto a perfectly-weighted through ball from recently-arrived substitute Scott McGleish before firing an angled shot past Scott Brown. The rangy striker also played a key role in the Pirates' second goal. When Brown was unable to hold his powerful 25-yard drive and home skipper Alan Bennett hesitated, Richards nipped in to tap home. A poor opening 45 minutes produced little goalmouth action. Indeed, it took until the 44th minute for the game to burst into life, when Zebroski placed a firm header against the outside of a post following Gary Sawyer's left-wing cross. Cheltenham substitutes Jeff Goulding and debutant Jermaine McGlashan both forced saves from Michael Poke before McGleish missed a golden chance to seal the points when he headed narrowly wide.
