Match Preview

West Brom, winless against Chelsea since the early 1980s, host the Premier League leaders knowing that victory could take them out of the bottom three.

It may be the most unlikely result of the season but Baggies manager Tony Mowbray is refusing to rule out picking up points against Luiz Felipe Scolari's side.

"On paper it doesn't get any easier but it's good for us, it will be all the big-four we've played. The plan is to stay in this division and have another go next year," said Mowbray.

"In every game we've been very competitive. For an hour I thought we were pretty good in the 4-0 defeat at Manchester United, but that's what those teams will do to you."

Despite talking up his side's performances, Mowbray has seen them lose four times in their last five games - dropping them to the foot of the table after an encouraging start to the season.

Such has been the deterioration in Albion's form that Mowbray has already started to talk about possible new signings in January, with loan arrivals particularly likely.

"Some top clubs like the way we play and think their fringe players might actually benefit by joining us," he added.

"There are some options for us but the bottom line is I will only take players if I think they will help our team, not just because bigger clubs are offering them."

Abdoulaye Meite remains a doubt for the Baggies, although he has returned to training after sitting on the sidelines since the end of August with a calf problem, while Do-Heon Kim will be absent with a knee injury picked up in last week's 3-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Scolari will have a rested squad to chose from after most of their stars sat out the shock midweek Carling Cup defeat to Burnley, although Didier Drogba, Joe Cole, Michael Ballack and Ashley Cole are all fit after spells out with injury.

Ricardo Carvalho is also back in training after his thigh strain, but both he and Ashley Cole will struggle to be match-fit in time for Saturday evening's game.

That should leave the Chelsea back-line intact which, after keeping two clean sheets in a row in the league, is not necessarily a good thing for Baggies fans.

Nicolas Anelka will be hoping Drogba responds well after his run-out in midweek, assuming Scolari opts to play both strikers together, as a lone role for the Frenchman has not been a complete success despite him becoming the league's top scorer last week.

Match Report

Nicolas Anelka continued his red-hot run in front of goal to fire Chelsea back to the top of the table - and a place in the record books - as rock-bottom West Bromwich Albion were swept aside at The Hawthorns.

The enigmatic Frenchman helped himself to a first-half double to take his goal tally for the season to 13 - with seven of them coming in the last three league games.

The win, which saw Chelsea leapfrog back over Liverpool at the top of the table, was their tenth successive away victory. That is a Premier League record and matches the run Tottenham put together in the old First Division in 1959.

Chelsea, who were given the lead by a stunning strike by Jose Bosingwa, were simply too good for Albion as they took their goal tally from their last four away games to 13.

Albion are now in real danger of getting cut adrift at the foot of the table following a run of one point from six games.

Manager Tony Mowbray admitted before the game that he feared Albion could be torn apart by Chelsea and his fears were well founded.

Ironically, Albion made the best start of the two teams and they were made to pay a heavy price for not capitalising on their impressive opening spell as Chelsea hit them with three goals in the final 11 minutes of the first half.

Albion's Scotland international midfielder James Morrison fired just over the bar in the first minute before Ishmael Miller wasted a golden chance to break the deadlock. Picked out by a pin-point pass from Borja Valero in the 15th minute, Miller dragged his shot wide from 12 yards.

It was a turning point as Chelsea then went on to dominate affairs. Salomon Kalou went close from long range before Florent Malouda was twice denied by goalkeeper Scott Carson.

But, despite the best efforts of the England international, there was nothing that Carson could do when Bosingwa literally scored a goal out of nothing in the 34th minute.

The Portugal international right-back picked up a short pass from Malouda and took a couple of steps infield before curling home a 25-yard drive.

Carson got his hand to the ball but could only deflect it on to the bar before it fell into the net.

That was effectively game over and Chelsea doubled their advantage through a cool piece of finishing from Anelka. Released by a Malouda header, Anelka surged into the area before placing his shot past Carson at his near post.

Anelka was simply unstoppable at this stage and came up with another smart finish in stoppage time when he collected a cross-field pass from Kalou and again pounced at Carson's near post.

Chelsea went into cruise control in the second half and Anelka was unlucky not to complete his hat-trick when Jonas Olsson blocked his goal-bound drive in the 56th minute.

To their credit, Albion kept battling and substitute Filipe Teixeira was inches away from a consolation strike on the hour when his 25-yard drive dropped just over the bar while Do-Heon Kim flashed his angled shot just wide.
