It's a beautiful day for football as Stoke prepare to take on Chelsea at the Britannia Stadium

Match Preview

Stoke City's tricky fixture list shows no sign of easing up with the visit of Chelsea to the Britannia Stadium.

Last weekend the Potters travelled to Anfield to take on the might of Liverpool and left Merseyside with a prized point after holding the home side to a goalless draw.

But this weekend's clash with Chelsea will surely provide an even sterner examination of Tony Pulis' side as they take on a side second in the Premier League table and on a high following an unbeaten start to the new season.

Stoke's point last weekend brought to an end a two-match losing sequence and afterwards captain Andy Griffin was in a jubilant mood.

"I think the result will send out a message. This says that we're resilient and we aren't intimidated by any one player, any team or any ground," he said. "We're in this division through sheer hard work and effort. We deserve to be here and we don't want to be here for the one season."

Further good news has arrived in the shape of scans revealing defender Ibrahima Sonko did not suffer a fractured leg at Liverpool.

However, £5million record signing Dave Kitson has now passed the 400-minute mark without scoring a goal for his new club.

Meanwhile, Chelsea arrive in the Potteries looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season and with their sights set on claiming top spot in the table.

Last Sunday's come-from-behind 1-1 draw with main title rivals Manchester United kept them one point behind leaders Arsenal.

However, Luiz Felipe Scolari's side have the advantage of playing first on Saturday so, by the time the Gunners kick-off against Hull City in the day's late fixture, they could find themselves replaced at the summit.

The Blues haven't had the easiest of build-ups to this fixture though as Portuguese duo Ricardo Carvalho and Deco have both been ruled out by injury.

Deco has a tear in an upper thigh muscle and will be out for approximately two weeks, while Carvalho had a scan on Monday that showed he had strained a medial collateral ligament in his knee which could keep him out of action for up to a month.

With Michael Essien already absent for around six months after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament and Didier Drogba still not certain of being able to manage 90 minutes, even the giant pool of talent available to Scolari is beginning to look a little stretched.

Brazilian defender Alex is certain to come into the starting line-up, while last weekend's goal hero Salomon Kalou is pushing for a rare 90 minutes.

Match Report

Chelsea extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 27 games after they overcame battling Stoke City at a packed Britannia Stadium.

Tony Pulis' side gave their all, but it never looked likely to be quite enough against top-quality opposition.

Chelsea had injuries with Ricardo Carvalho, Deco and Joe Cole all absent, but Stoke had to counter a big problem themselves with long-throw specialist Rory Delap ruled out with a hamstring strain.

Predictably, Chelsea gained a massive percentage of the possession and Thomas Sorensen was soon forced to tip over a 20-yard screamer from Michael Ballack.

And Sorensen made a tremendous save to deny Didier Drogba in the 14th minute after racing from his line to narrow the angle after Frank Lampard's slide-rule pass had sent him on his way.

Stoke, as usual, were contesting every inch of turf and Mamady Sidibe was proving a menace on the odd occasions Pulis' side were getting into the final third.

But Chelsea's pressure finally paid in the 36th minute in a move started and finished by Jose Bosingwa.

The Portugal international right-back eventually burst onto Lampard's telling pass to drive a shot across Sorensen and into the far corner of the net, despite Andy Griffin's attempt to clear off the line.

Chelsea twice went close to extending their advantage early in the second half as Lampard's shot drifted inches wide and a fierce drive from Florent Malouda smashed against the Stoke crossbar.

And Stoke came close to making them pay as they enjoyed their best period of pressure followed the introduction of substitute Ricardo Fuller in the 53rd minute.

Leon Cort rose highest to Liam Lawrence's right-wing corner on the hour but the big defender's firm header was cleared off the line by John Obi Mikel.

But Cort was culpable as Chelsea ensured there would be no anxious finale, with substitute Nicolas Anelka making the points safe 14 minutes from time.

Cort stumbled as he attempted to deal with the excellent Bosingwa's right-wing delivery and Anelka struck a first-time shot which brushed Sorensen's fingers on its way in.

Chelsea could afford the luxury of seeing Lampard squander a simple chance by his high standards in the closing stages as Stoke, who gave absolutely everything, finally ran out of steam.
