Match Preview

A refreshed Portsmouth side host Chelsea on Tuesday evening looking to extend caretaker manager Paul Hart's unbeaten start to life in the Fratton Park hot-seat.

Pompey enjoyed a rare mid-season weekend off as Saturday's scheduled opponents Manchester United were otherwise engaged in the Carling Cup Final.

The extended break since a 2-2 draw with Stoke City has allowed Hart to spend some quality time with his players on the training ground, while Chelsea have been forced to play an additional two fixtures.

The point gained against the Potters and the three picked up in a 2-0 defeat of Manchester City since Hart replaced Tony Adams has lifted the south coast club up to 16th place in the table.

But with just two points separating them from the relegation zone, Pompey can ill afford to lose their focus on their return to action.

Two 4-0 defeats to Chelsea already this season - in the league in August and the third round of the Carling Cup in September - will act as a warning to the Pompey players.

Midfielders Richard Hughes (hamstring), Papa Bouba Diop (knee), Jerome Thomas (back) and Marc Wilson (hip) remain absent alongside full-back Armand Traore (thigh).

Guus Hiddink believes Chelsea are still in the running for the Premier League title after seeing his new side climb up to second place with Saturday's 2-1 win over Wigan Athletic.

Frank Lampard's late header secured three priceless points for the Blues and kept alive their slim hopes of catching leaders Manchester United.

However, Hiddink knows another slip-up - whether at Fratton Park or elsewhere - would test the belief of even the most optimistic Blues follower.

The veteran Dutchman has led the club to three straight victories in all competitions since replacing the sacked Luiz Felipe Scolari and their resurgence has coincided with a return to form of Didier Drogba.

The Ivory Coast striker has scored just one Premier League goal this season, but his recent performances have suggested he is poised to catch fire.

Match Report

Didier Drogba's first Premier League goal since Boxing Day cut Manchester United's lead at the top of the table to just four points as Chelsea edged out Portsmouth 1-0 at Fratton Park.

After a virtually anonymous 79 minutes, Drogba reacted sharply to capitalise on some indecisive Portsmouth defending to meet substitute Ricardo Quaresma's dangerous cross and fire home the winner.

The home side had wasted a glorious chance ten minutes earlier when Niko Kranjcar connected with Peter Crouch's centre but the Croatian skewed his effort wide.

A lively first half saw both sides trade blows as Drogba was inches away from connecting with Ashley Cole's driven cross before Portsmouth goalkeeper David James denied the Ivorian after a clever chip pass from Florent Malouda.

Chelsea's dominance in midfield grew as the half wore on and Frank Lampard had a series of long distance shots that either flew wide or were denied by James.

James was not the only goalkeeper forced to earn his wages as five minutes before the break, Petr Cech was at full-stretch to deny Sean Davis' thunderous low drive.

As the weather worsened in the second half so did the football and the game looked destined for a stalemate unless someone could conjure a moment of magic.

Portsmouth striker David Nugent turned John Terry only to be denied by the imposing stature of Cech.

And the home side came so close to putting their noses in front when Chelsea threw all ten outfield players forward, neglecting to mark Peter Crouch, and when a long clearance up field found its way to the England striker he galloped forward with purpose before picking out Kranjcar but again the Croatian's finish was tame.

But with ten minutes to spare, Quaresma jinked his way down the right-hand side and although his near-post cross was intended for Michael Ballack, the German missed the ball altogether for Drogba to profit.

After the full-time whistle, Portsmouth confirmed that caretaker management duo Paul Hart and Brian Kidd are to stay in charge until the end of the season.

The pair were appointed following the sacking of Tony Adams at the beginning of February and under their leadership the south coast club have won one, drawn one and lost one of their three games.
