After a guard of honour for the champions, the referee gets this afternoon's match underway at St James' Park.
Outspoken Laurent Robert's days might well be numbered at St. James' Park, but the enigmatic Frenchman still managed to go out in a blaze of glory. In what was certain to be his swansong for Newcastle, manager Graeme Souness did not give the winger an opportunity on the pitch. But not to be outdone, Robert thrilled the massed throngs who remained to give the United players a standing ovation at the final whistle. While the United players handed out their shirts to fans, Robert went much further with an impromptu strip down to his briefs, much to the delight of his adoring fans. On the pitch, United and Chelsea fought out a tame 1-1 draw that saw the Stamford Bridge outfit stretch their record points total to 95 and Newcastle finish in their worst ever Premiership position - 14th. United paid the champions the ultimate compliment with a guard of honour as they walked onto the pitch in what was the fourth meeting of the season between the two sides. Chelsea were given a standing ovation by the home crowd as they entered the arena accompanied by their former player Celestine Babyaro. It was 31 minutes before either side managed a shot on target and Shay Given easily dealt with Jiri Jarosik's effort. United went in front after 33 minutes following successive corners. The second from the right was swung in by Charles N'Zogbia and flicked to the back post where Geremi, under pressure from Titus Bramble, turned the ball into his own net. Chelsea were level straight after the kick-off from the penalty spot. Babyaro held back Eidur Gudjohnsen, after Ricardo Carvalho's ball had been flicked on by Jarosik. Frank Lampard stepped up for the kick and when he saw Given move to the right, he drilled the ball straight down the middle for his 19th goal of the season. Over zealous referee Howard Webb somehow managed to conjure up four bookings for each side in what was never a dirty match. Carlo Cudicini pulled off a stunning save to deny Patrick Kluivert what would have been a farewell goal for him. The Dutchman powered a downward header from James Milner after 71 minutes but the Blues keeper managed to turn it behind. At the other end, Given was equally impressive six minutes from time with a reaction save to keep out Jarosik. Overall a point apiece was a fair result, to end the campaign with two wins for Chelsea, one for Newcastle and this draw from their four encounters.
