Match Report

The race for this year's Premier League crown effectively comes down to 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunchtime as Chelsea look to spoil what has been billed as Manchester United's title party.

Victory for United over their nearest rivals - Chelsea are three points adrift with just three games remaining - would virtually guarantee them a second successive league championship.

However, the Blues know that three points for them would blow the title race back open again and ratchet up the pressure on the Old Trafford club.

Chelsea's 13-game unbeaten run in the league has kept them on the coat-tails of the champions, while confidence has been buoyed further by their 1-1 Champions League draw with Liverpool in midweek.

Avram Grant's side were heading for a 1-0 semi-final first leg defeat at Anfield, before John Arne Riise's stoppage time own goal put them in the box seat to reach the final ahead of next week's second leg at Stamford Bridge.

Domestically Chelsea also have an impressive home record against United, as they haven't lost on home soil once during AS Roman Abramovich's reign at Stamford Bridge.

The last time the Red Devils left west London with three league points was towards the end of the 2001-02 campaign.

Returning to the present day and Michael Essien seems certain to return to midfield after missing the European tie through suspension. The Ghana international is likely to step in for Frank Lampard, who could make way due to personal reasons.

Elsewhere, Grant's only other injury absentee is back-up goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini, who is missing with a hamstring strain.

United were comfortable 2-0 winners over Chelsea when the sides met at Old Trafford back in September in Grant's first match in charge.

A repeat scoreline would virtually guarantee a tenth league championship for Sir Alex Ferguson, but the veteran Scot will certainly warn his side against complacency.

United remained in Spain to train following their goalless Champions League semi-final first leg draw with Barcelona on Wednesday night before travelling directly to London on Friday.

But their main injury doubt continues to surround the fitness of Nemanja Vidic, who missed the midweek game with a stomach illness.

Wes Brown deputised for the Serbia centre-half alongside Rio Ferdinand with Owen Hargreaves employed as a makeshift right-back at the Camp Nou.

Should Vidic fail a fitness test then Ferguson seems set to stick with the same back four rather than throw young Spaniard Gerard Pique into the fire of a title decider.

Elsewhere, the Red Devils have a virtually fully-fit squad to choose from as only Louis Saha (hamstring) is unavailable.
