Chelsea face Levski Sofia in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge tonight knowing that victory will secure top spot in Group A
Andriy Shevchenko and Shaun Wright-Phillips ensured Chelsea finished top of their Champions League group following a comfortable 2-0 victory over Levski Sofia at Stamford Bridge. The Ukraine international, who hasn't enjoyed the most profitable of times since his £30million arrival in the summer, opened his European account for the Blues with a 27th minute strike. Wright-Phillips then came off the bench to add gloss to the scoreline with a superb second and his first of the season, as Chelsea secured top spot in Group A at a canter. Shevchenko sent out a statement of intent inside the opening 90 seconds when he was only denied by the acrobatics of Bozhidar Mitrev after the Levski goalkeeper had recovered from being rounded by Arjen Robben to pull off a superb save. But the former AC Milan striker was not to be denied and he popped up in the box just before the half-hour to latch on to Frank Lampard's pass and guide a shot into the far corner with the outside of his right boot. Cedric Bardon was inches away from a shock equaliser when he met Hristo Yoyov's cross with a volley that thundered just over the bar as the visitors threatened for the first time after 35 minutes. But Chelsea always looked in control and after Shevchenko and Didier Drogba had come close to doubling the advantage either side of half-time, the killer second duly arrived seven minutes from time. Ricardo Carvalho stole the ball deep in Chelsea territory and exchanged passes with Wright-Phillips, before the diminutive winger picked his spot in the far corner and executed a superb low strike from the edge of the penalty area. Michael Essien almost added a third five minutes from time with a powerful header from a Lampard corner which Mitrev tipped over the bar. At the other end Hilario pulled off a spectacular one-handed save to deny Richard Eromoigbe with a long-range strike, but by then Chelsea had done more than enough to wrap up the points on a comfortable night at Stamford Bridge.
