Match Preview

New-look line-up for Addicks Charlton boss Chris Powell will field a new-look side for the clash with Bournemouth. Powell has brought in 15 new players over the summer while 14 have left The Valley since the end of last season. However, winger Danny Green is suspended for a red card while playing for Dagenham last term and full-back Cedric Evina has a slight knee problem so they will have to wait to make their debuts. Ben Hamer is set to get the nod ahead of Rob Elliot in goal behind an entirely new back four of Andy Hughes, Michael Morrison, Matt Taylor and former Bournemouth left-back Rhoys Wiggins. Another ex-Cherry, Danny Hollands, should start in midfield while Paul Hayes could make his debut in attack. Bradley Wright-Phillips, Johnnie Jackson and Scott Wagstaff look set to be the only survivors from last season in the starting line-up. Bournemouth manager Lee Bradbury is facing a dilemma over his goalkeeper for the opening-day trip to The Valley. Both Shwan Jalal and Dan Thomas have impressed for the Cherries in pre-season, leaving Bradbury with a decision to make over who gets the jersey. Joe Partington will play no part, though, and is still another month from a return as he continues his recovery from a hip operation. Bradbury has kept his cards close to his chest in the build-up to the encounter, although Adam Barrett is certain to play as he captains the side for the first time. Scott Malone and Nathan Byrne are set to make their debuts at full-back while Harry Arter could get the nod in centre midfield.

Match Report

Stephens stars in Charlton stroll Dale Stephens shone on his Charlton debut as the Addicks got their League One campaign underway with a comfortable 3-0 win over Bournemouth. Stephens, a cultured midfielder who was briefly linked with a move to German giants Bayern Munich in the summer before plumping for the Valley, swept home to give his side a deserved lead midway through the first half. The former Oldham playmaker had a hand in the game's outstanding moment with 50 minutes gone, finding Scott Wagstaff who thrashed a volley into the net from 25 yards. Johnnie Jackson scored 15 goals from midfield for the Londoners last season and he got up and running for the current campaign, netting a penalty with 13 minutes remaining. Bournemouth failed to offer much in the way of an attacking threat, and Lee Bradbury's side were some way short of the form that took them to the play-off semi-finals last term. Marc Pugh had their best chance after 56 minutes but shot straight at Charlton goalkeeper Rob Elliot.
