The game gets underway
Aston Villa's bid for Europe next season suffered a setback with a disappointing goalless home draw against an indifferent Charlton side. Neither team could raise the tempo and Villa were guilty of another frustrating home performance which has seen them win only twice at Villa Park this year. Following a run of only one win in nine games Charlton were more than happy to escape with a point from the encounter. Villa's patched up team, lacking both Martin Laursen and Darius Vassell in the starting line-up, were nevertheless the more impressive in the early stages of a relatively low key game. The Midlands club, fresh from their storming 3-2 win at Southampton, pressurised the Addicks without really looking dangerous in front of goal. Juan Pablo Angel's lack of ball control resulted in a promising raid breaking down and this became a frustrating feature of Villa's play. There was one moment of excitement when Thomas Hitzlsperger responded to the crowd's demand to shoot hammered in one of his specials which Dean Kiely parried. Hitzlsperger, making one of his last appearances for Villa before returning to Germany in the summer, was easily the most industrious player on the field and did much to raise Villa's hopes of staging a breakthrough But Kiely proved to be a stumbling block on several occasions as he demonstrated when Lee Hendrie set up Angel cutting in from the right. A low cross to the near post was met by Carlton Cole, but the ball was bravely saved at close range by the Charlton keeper. Villa, keen to make amends for the 3-0 defeat suffered at the hands of Charlton earlier in the season, strived to break the stalemate with a stream of attacks, but the finishing touch was sadly lacking. As a result of Villa's dominance Charlton had to operate a containing game. Danny Murphy attempted to spark off some attacks but they lacked depth as Villa were well on top without being able to capitalise upon their superior play. Cole, who was on loan at Charlton last season, enjoyed one of his better games and was of more danger than the experienced Angel. The youngster made one good run and produced a low cross with which Angel failed to make contact to the obvious relief of Charlton's stretched defence. A poor pass by Mark Delaney enabled Murphy to gain possession and send Francis Jeffers racing clear but his shot was hastily put over the bar. There was little improvement in the initial stages of the second half although Charlton came more into the game. In the 62nd minute a clever lob from Nobby Solano beat Kiely but fortunately for the Addicks Murphy was at the far post and headed clear. Murphy produced a good corner in the following minute which Hermann Hreidarsson headed just wide of the far post. A similar fate befell an effort from Hitzlsperger when he failed to control his shot following a low cross from Solano which summed up the low quality of this match.
