Match Preview

Noble missing for Cumbrians Carlisle midfielder Liam Noble will miss the final game of his loan spell against Sheffield United through suspension. Noble, 20, who manager Greg Abbott is keen to bring back to Brunton Park, will miss out after receiving his fifth booking of the season in Friday night's 1-1 draw at Huddersfield and return to parent club Sunderland. Abbott is also expected to be without right-back Frank Simek, who missed out on Friday due to a turned ankle, and striker Rory Loy, who broke his leg in the Boxing Day draw at Preston. On-loan defender Christian Ribeiro will continue in Simek's absence in what will be his final appearance before returning to parent club Bristol City, while Paddy Madden and Tom Taiwo will be vying for starts in the roles vacated by Loy and Noble. Striker Craig Curran and defender Stephen O'Halloran (both knee) and winger Andy Welsh (calf) remain long-term absentees. Sheffield United pair Richard Cresswell and Stephen Quinn will both return to the squad following suspension. Striker Cresswell and midfielder Quinn both missed the Blades' eighth straight win on Saturday against Hartlepool due to one-game bans and now give manager Danny Wilson a selection dilemma. Chris Porter stepped in for Cresswell alongside Ched Evans on Saturday, with James Beattie making his second substitute's appearance since returning to the club at the end of November, while Lee Williamson returned to the midfield following his ban. Defender Matt Lowton is doubtful after being forced off early in the second half against Hartlepool due to a tight hamstring, so Johnny Ertl could return to the starting XI. Wilson has no other new injury or suspension problems as his second-placed side look to close the four-point gap on leaders Charlton with a seventh successive league win.

Match Report

McGovern halts Blades charge Jon-Paul McGovern fired a second-half winner to clinch Carlisle a thrilling 3-2 victory and end Sheffield United's eight-game winning run. A first-half brace from Carlisle's Ivory Coast striker Francois Zoko rocked the normally frugal Blades defence, but Ched Evans twice struck back for the Blades and was denied his hat-trick on two more occasions by the woodwork before a three-man move led to McGovern firing the winner. Zoko gave Carlisle the ideal start with his first goal in the second minute when he cleverly flicked the ball past defender Harry Maguire before bursting through to drill his shot past Blades goalkeeper Steve Simonsen. The lead lasted just five minutes before Maguire made amends by heading Stephen Quinn's free-kick back across the six-yard box leaving Evans with a simple tap in before the striker shook the woodwork with another effort. Quinn was next to rattle a post as the Blades turned the screw, but Zoko was on target again in the 15th minute, diving unchallenged to head home after Lee Miller had played Paul Thirwell's pass across the face of goal. Evans went close after half-time, creating space for a low shot which cannoned back off the inside of the left-hand post, but Carlisle grabbed the lead for the third time in the 71st minute when Lee Miller laid the ball into the stride of McGovern, who slotted a low shot wide of Simonsen.
