Match Preview

Cooper set for Cumbrians bow Carlisle are expected to hand a debut to new loan signing Liam Cooper in the home clash with Bristol Rovers. Centre-half Lubo Michalik has returned to parent club Leeds, James Chester, on loan from Manchester United, has completed a permanent move to Hull and Danny Livesey is not yet ready to return from a long-term groin injury, so midfielder Paul Thirlwell was forced to stand in at the heart of defence in last weekend's FA Cup defeat at Torquay. Cooper, signed this week from Hull, will be joined in the squad by another 19-year-old, Sunderland midfielder Liam Noble. Both players have joined for an initial month. Left-back Thomas Cruise has returned to Arsenal after his two-month loan spell and striker Mike Grella is back at Leeds, but recent midfield signing Marco Gbarssin made his debut off the bench last week and is hoping for his first start. Bristol Rovers have new manager Dave Penney in full control for the first time. Caretaker manager Darren Patterson picked the side that managed a 2-2 draw with Walsall but Penney was alongside him on the bench, issuing instructions to the players. Speaking to the club's official website, Penney said: "I have got to get my message across about how I want to play the game and how the players have to be fit, mobile and committed." On-loan goalkeeper Luke Daniels should continue in goal after his debut in midweek and Penney has no injury or suspension problems ahead of the trip to Cumbria. Top-scorer Will Hoskins hit his 11th goal of the season against the Saddlers to make it four in as many games and will look to continue his hot streak.

Match Report

Cumbrians enjoy cruise Carlisle cantered to a 4-0 win over Bristol Rovers at windswept Brunton Park. Two James Berrett penalties and second-half goals by Craig Curran and debutant Liam Cooper sank the visitors, who missed a host of early chances before Berrett opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time. Rovers also played most of the second half with 10 men after Danny Coles received a straight red card. They could have been well ahead by the interval but for a combination of bad luck and some dreadful finishing. Coles rattled the Carlisle bar with a header and leading scorer Will Hoskins wasted two clear-cut opportunities. Instead the Cumbrians went ahead in the 44th minute when Gary Sawyer handled in a crowded penalty area and Berrett coolly tucked away the spot-kick. The second half started badly for Rovers with Coles' 51st-minute dismissal for a challenge on Francois Zoko and Carlisle doubled their lead six minutes later when Curran latched onto Berrett's ball through the middle and neatly slid his shot home. On-loan Hull defender Cooper struck in the 73rd minute when he rose at the far post to head home a Berrett corner. Berrett scored his second penalty of the game in the 81st minute, blasting home after Sawyer had tripped Ben Marshall in the box.
