Match Preview

New-look Cumbrians ready for Bees

A host of new arrivals could make their debuts when Carlisle take on Brentford in their npower League One opener.

A new look defence is expected to feature Frank Simek, Sean McDaid and on-loan Manchester United youngster James Chester.

Elsewhere Craig Curran, Jason Price, James Berrett, and Francois Zoko are all in contention, although competition for places will be fierce as boss Greg Abbott boasts a virtual clean bill of health.

The fixture at Brunton Park is a repeat of the opening game between the sides last season.

On that occasion the Bees, inspired by a brace from winger Myles Weston, ran out 3-1 winners.

Brentford strikers Carl Cort and Charlie MacDonald face late fitness checks.

Cort has been carrying a knock to his Achilles and MacDonald is feeling a groin problem but the Bees are hopeful both will travel.

Boss Andy Scott need not take any risks with the duo, however, having boosted his attacking options with the signings of Gary Alexander from Millwall and Brighton's Nicky Forster.

Alexander and Forster could make immediate debuts while winger Myles Weston, who scored twice as Brentford won the corresponding fixture 3-1 on the opening day of last season, provides another option in attack.

Scott has brought in nine new faces in all with Michael Spillane and David McCracken among those likely to start.

Match Report

Cumbrians get revenge on Bees A sparkling first-half display ensured Carlisle earned a 2-0 win over Brentford at Brunton Park. Goals from Gary Madine and veteran defender Ian Harte meant that there was no repeat of last season's opening day defeat to the Bees. The Brentford defence was given a torrid time by Carlisle's energetic front line and twice in the first six minutes debutant Craig Curran struck the woodwork. First he sent a looping header onto the bar from James Berrett's accurate cross and then poked a rebound against the foot of the post after keeper Simon Moore had saved his initial effort. Carlisle went ahead in the 22nd minute when left-back Sean McDaid fired low into the heart of the penalty box and Madine had time to get the ball under control and beat Moore with a shot from eight yards. And on the stroke of half-time Curran was fouled just inside the area by Kevin O'Connor and Harte sent Moore the wrong way from the penalty spot. Bees' second-half sub Robbie Simpson had an immediate impact setting up a great chance for Alexander whose shot on the turn from 12 yards was brilliantly saved by Adam Collin.
