Match Preview

Duo doubts for Bluebirds Cardiff boss Dave Jones could be without Stephen McPhail and Lee Naylor when his side host Portsmouth. Midfielder McPhail and left-back Naylor were forced out of the 2-0 win at Sheffield Utd on Tuesday night with as yet unspecified injuries and are doubtful. Darcy Blake and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas replaced the duo at Bramall Lane but Jason Koumas, Gavin Rae, Gabor Gypes and Jlloyd Samuel are also options available to Jones. Jay Bothroyd and strike partner Craig Bellamy have been suffering from groin and hamstring strains respectively but are expected to be included while defender Kevin McNaughton is set to recover from a gluteal injury in time to retain his place. Jon Parkin could return to the squad after missing the last two games with a muscle strain but Michael Chopra is not expected to be risked despite returning to training following a hamstring problem. Centre-back Mark Hudson (knee) and goalkeeper David Marshall (elbow) remain long-term absentees. Hayden Mullins will miss his first game of the season for Portsmouth. The midfielder, an ever-present in all competitions this term, was sent off for deliberate handball during Tuesday night's 3-0 defeat by Coventry. The club appealed against the red card but the decision was upheld and Mullins serves a one-match ban. Skipper Liam Lawrence has made a timely recovery from a hamstring injury and is likely to step into Mullins' midfield spot. Lawrence proved his fitness with a run-out as a substitute against the Sky Blues and should start. Danny Webber came through 75 minutes unscathed after starting his first match in a year following a cruciate injury but fellow striker Kanu may get the nod to face the side he scored the winner against in the 2008 FA Cup final.

Match Report

Bluebirds flying high Cardiff moved into the npower Championship automatic promotion places courtesy of a comfortable 3-0 victory over Portsmouth. After Norwich's 2-1 win against Nottingham Forest on Friday night, the Bluebirds went into this encounter knowing they needed three points to lift themselves back into the top two. And they secured that thanks, in the main, to a fluent attacking display full of endeavour. Their intent was epitomised by Craig Bellamy, who began a scintillating performance by setting up Seyi Olofinjana's opener. Pompey's cause was then hampered when Ricardo Rocha received an 18th-minute red card. The Bluebirds capitalised on their man advantage with goals from Jay Bothroyd and Peter Whittingham capping an excellent effort. Despite the importance of the clash, the Bluebirds started in confident fashion with Bellamy and Bothroyd looking particularly menacing. And they took the lead in the eighth minute through Olofinjana. Bellamy was the orchestrator, capitalising on a clever ball from Bothroyd to jink down the right wing before sending in a delicious centre which Olofinjana gleefully headed home. Portsmouth tried to get back into the game but their chances were hampered considerably midway through the opening period when Rocha was dismissed for appearing to headbutt Bothroyd. That sparked unsavoury scenes, with the centre-half having to be restrained as he left the field. Pompey's problems were almost compounded from the resulting free-kick as Whittingham hit just over the crossbar. Dave Jones' side continued to dominate and could have grabbed a second, but, after being found by Bellamy's excellent cross, Bothroyd headed just wide. Any hopes the visitors had of getting back into the game all but evaporated on the stroke of half-time as Bothroyd got the goal his industry deserved. Whittingham's corner caused chaos in the Portsmouth box and, after several ricochets, the ball fell to the former Blackburn striker, who was left with the simplest of finishes. Picking up where they left off, Cardiff assumed control of proceedings once again after the interval although Portsmouth were threatening with a counter-attacking approach. The match entered a lull in the second period, with the hosts seemingly content to retain possession. Chances still came fleetingly, though, with Bothroyd almost netting his second when he saw his goal-bound effort blocked by Aaron Mokoena. The Bluebirds did get a third in the 73rd minute when Bellamy showed great vision to find Whittingham, who slotted home his 10th goal of the season to wrap up the points.
