Cameroon may not be able to get out of this group and into the Round of 16 but they won't role over for Holland here in Cape Town and the Dutch will want to keep up their winning run
Match Report
Netherlands were forced to work for a 2-1 win over Cameroon, but produced when they needed to, keeping them top of Group E with a perfect record and with a round of 16 match with Slovakia to look forward to.
If the Dutch thought Cameroon, who had no chance of making the next round after losing their opening two matches, would roll over then they were proved wrong within the opening 15 minutes.
Goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg will certainly testify as to the African side's efforts, after he was forced into a desperate punch ten minutes in from one of many free-kicks from Geremi, then was rooted to his line five minutes later when Eric Choupo-Moting almost beat Giovanni van Bronckhorst to nod in a corner at the near post.
Most of their effort was in midfield though where they played like a team that wanted to impress before going home, compared to Holland's relaxed sense of comfort.
Worryingly for their future opponents, the Dutch were still able to contain Cameroon when it mattered and looked decisive going forward.
At no point was that clearer than with Robin van Persie's goal, which was made to look devilishly simple.
The Arsenal forward played a nice one-two with Rafael Van der Vaart, receiving the ball behind the defence and, under little pressure, firing under Souleymanou Hamidou into the far corner.
To Cameroon's growing credit they came out for the second half even more determined to make their belated mark on the tournament, even if that meant leaving gaps at the back that Van Persie looked ready to exploit.
A rash of substitutions on the hour livened up both sides, with youngster Vincent Aboubakar creating a golden chance for Jean Makoun, who couldn't beat Stekelenburg from close range.
The same two players combined to win a free-kick on the edge of the box which Geremi curled towards goal but found Van der Vaart's arm in the way, winning Cameroon a penalty which Samuel Eto'o put away with typical aplomb.
The African side weren't allowed to press for the lead as Netherlands decided to step up a gear, introducing Arjen Robben for his first outing of the tournament and taking a stretched Cameroon apart.
It was the Bayern Munich winger's run and shot from 20 yards that hit Hamidou's right-hand post and bounced out for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to pass the ball into the empty net, giving Holland the win they always looked like expecting to get.
