Match Report

The play-off hopes of Wycombe Wanderers were finally extinguished following a 2-1 home defeat against lowly Bury. In truth Wycombe didn't deserve the win they desperately needed to keep pace with their play-off rivals as they slipped to their 8th league defeat of the season.

It had all started so well for the hosts, captain Roger Johnson striding forward from his own half and as he ran unchallenged into the Bury penalty area he lacerated the ball past the helpless Glyn Garner in the visitors goal.

As the first half wore on Wycombe continued to create chances but thanks to rank bad finishing and some bad luck they didn't add to their advantage.

On 23 minutes Danny Senda sent top scorer Nathan Tyson away down the right but he shot just wide. 12 minutes later Ian Stonebridge managed to shoot straight at the goalkeeper from eight yards.

On 37 minutes Bury snatched an undeserved equaliser. Some keystone cop defending from the home side saw the ball fall to left back Simon Whaley and he drove the ball past an exposed Frank Talia in the Wycombe goal.

Right on half time Senda nearly restored the Chairboys lead, floating in a shot from 25 yards which was well saved by Garner.

The second half saw Bury come into the game much more and they shook the home defence on 81 minutes, Dave Flitcroft picking up a short corner and guiding the ball into the far corner with Talia only grasping as the ball sailed over his head.

This followed a comical piece of defending between Senda and Talia resulting in a free kick for a back pass and the visitors took full advantage.

Wycombe pressed in the last 10 minutes, sending captain Johnson forward but the Bury defence held firm to reward the small band of travelling supporters who had made the long trek down south.
