Match Preview

Duo back to shake-up Shakers Midfield duo Steven Schumacher and Peter Sweeney are set to return when Bury host Walsall. Schumacher was suspended from Friday's 2-0 defeat to Tranmere after collecting his fifth booking of the season and Sweeney, on four cautions in the current campaign, was taken out of the firing line to avoid a possible ban. David Worrall and Patrick Cregg replaced Schumacher and Sweeney at Prenton Park and are expected to drop to the bench as Richie Barker's side look to return to winning ways. The Shakers are currently in negotiations to extend the loan of 20-year-old Liverpool forward David Amoo, who could come into the starting line-up in place of Lenell John-Lewis. Top scorer Andy Bishop took a knock to the shin against Tranmere but is expected to be fit. Walsall will be without suspended centre-back Manny Smith. Smith received his fifth booking of the campaign in the goalless draw at home to Rochdale on New Year's Eve and now serves an automatic one-match suspension. His unavailability is further felt by the continued absence of fellow central defender Olly Lancashire, who has missed the last three matches with a hamstring injury having been forced off in the FA Cup defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge. Midfielder Kevan Hurst is still lacking match fitness as he looks to make his comeback from a broken bone in his heel. Resurgent Walsall are unbeaten in five league matches, although four of those have ended in draws, while they have tasted defeat in only two of their previous 11 in all competitions.

Match Report

Sweeney keeps Shakers on the up Bury jumped to within four points of the play-off places after a 2-1 home win over struggling Walsall. A stunning free-kick from Peter Sweeney sealed a deserved victory for the hosts after Walsall striker Jamie Paterson had cancelled out Mat Sadler's own goal. The Shakers dominated the first half and Walsall goalkeeper Jimmy Walker was left helpless when David Amoo's cross was deflected into the net by visiting defender Sadler. Walsall midfielder Adam Chambers then missed an absolute sitter, heading over the top after Cameron Belford had saved his first effort, but the Saddlers equalised when Paterson wrong-footed Belford to float a 25-yard free-kick into the top corner. Sweeney was determined to get in on the action though and curled a sublime left-footed free-kick in off the post a minute later. Neither side were able to assert themselves on a scrappy second-half, but Walsall substitute Claude Gnakpa slammed a left-footed effort just wide of the post and Steve Schumacher went close for Bury, shooting narrowly wide from long-range.
