Match Report

A game of two halves saw the home side come back strongly after being totally outplayed by their neighbours in the first period and they gained what was a deserved draw with a penalty having missed from the spot five minutes earlier.

Bury looked like extending their 100 per cent start to the season especially after they were gifted a goal after just seven minutes. Surrounded on his line by a crowd scene, Rochdale keeper Sam Russell punched a Brian Barry-Murphy corner into his own goal.

With the visitors very much on top Russell atoned for his error with one good save on 19 minutes to deny Andy Bishop and an even better one seven minutes before the break when a rare slip by defender Rory McArdle let Bishop through on goal.

The home side were much better after the break and should have equalised on 51 minutes when striker Adam Le Fondre headed wide when unmarked six yards from goal.

Teenage winger Will Buckley then began to have a major effect on the game having previously in the words of his manager, 'been caught in the headlights'.

On 59 minutes Buckley turned cleverly in the box and won a penalty after referee Bates decided he had been impeded by Efetobore Sodje. Chris Dagnall took the spot-kick without great conviction though and Bury keeper Wayne Brown, having guessed right, was able to make a fairly simple save.

Seven minutes later though after a surging run down the right by Buckley was ended with another foul in the penalty area, Le Fondre literally hammered home the subsequent spot-kick.

The home side continued to press right until the final whistle but the nearest they came to snatching a winner was when Buckley fired just wide after another mazy run.

Having seen his side lose their 100 per cent start to the campaign, Shakers boss Alan Knill was happy to take a point away from Spotland after admitting that his side came under the cosh in the second period.

His opposite number Keith Hill had an argument with at least one supporter during the game and said that he was going to take some time off in the coming week and hand the reins to his assistant Dave Flitcroft.
