It was not the way in which Notts player-manager Ian Richardson wanted to sign off at Meadow Lane, where he remains a hero to the fans. Those same fans stayed behind after a lacklustre performance to cheer Richardson who has just one game to go before a successor is brought in. Notts had begun rather more brightly, but quickly began to lose their way and long before the end of the first 45 minutes, Bury were in complete control with a well marshalled 3-5-2 formation in which veteran midfielder David Flitcroft pulled all the strings. Notts did not have a single effort on target in the first half and Richardson revised his formation from 4-4-2 to match that of Bury's, but it continued to be a one-sided encounter in Bury's favour with Saul Deeney far the busier of the two goalkeepers. The issue was settled early in the second half when young defender Emmet Friars showed his inexperience by conceding a free-kick on the edge of the box and was made to pay for it. Brian Barry-Murphy struck it sweetly beyond the Notts defensive wall and low into the far corner, Deeney having no chance. Bury were always the likelier to add to their score than Notts were to equalise, and would surely have done so if Flitcroft had added accuracy to his desire for a goal and if Colin Kazim-Richards and Ricky Shakes had shown the same kind of penetration as they did skill in the build-up. Notts became so desperate that when they gained a free-kick in injury time, even Deeney went forward in search of an equaliser, but even in a crowded penalty area, Bury's composed rearguard cleared with ease. It was not a happy return from Australian international duty for Notts midfielder Ruben Zadkovich, who came off the bench to commit four fouls and was subsequently cautioned.
