It's 3pm on Saturday, October 14th, the match has kicked off.
Former England midfielder Paul Ince will have shuddered at the extent of the job in front of him as his likely new charges capitulated to relegation rivals Bury. Set to be announced as Macclesfield's new manager next week, Ince must realise that he will have to don his boots to sort out Macclesfield's defensive frailties. Macclesfield dominated the opening exchanges with David Morley heading wide in the second minute and Kevin McIntyre forcing a fine save from on-loan keeper Lewis Edge in the fourth minute. But the home side's defensive wobbles were all too apparent in the 19th minute when a sliced clearance from John Miles bounced between Danny Swailes and Rob Scott for Andy Bishop to lash a first-time shot from 15 yards which was brilliantly tipped wide by Tommy Lee. Macclesfield took the lead on 28 minutes when Swailes flicked on a Miles corner for Rob Scott to hook over the line at the far post. However, their lead was shortlived with Richie Baker given the freedom of the park to stroll through midfield before powering home a 25-yard drive. Baker repeated the feat two minutes after the break when he was again given license to roam before clipping a superb shot inside the far post on the diagonal. Bury made Macclesfield's defence look leaden footed on 59 minutes when Dwayne Mattis nodded between the static Swailes and Morley for Glynn Hurst to stroke home his fifth goal in four on loan games from Shrewsbury Town. Macclesfield tried hard to get back into the game and in the 67th minute Jamie Tolley powered a volley which on-loan keeper Edge - called in from Blackpool late last night - made a brilliant save to tip wide. Swailes then saw a powerful header cleared off the line by Marc Pugh. The Cheshire side finally got their reward on 77 minutes when Spencer Weir-Daley headed home at the near post to give them a late lifeline. And they nearly made it pay in injury time when substitute Colin Heath powered a 20-yard drive against the upright.
