A disputed second-half penalty from Barry Conlon secured Darlington a narrow 1-0 victory against Bury at the TFM Darlington Arena. Darlington were first on the attack with a solo effort by Julian Joachim in the opening minute. Joachim's 20-yard right-footer had Bury keeper Kasper Schmeichel scrambling across goal to ensure it went wide. Schmeichel was then saved in the 14th minute by Nicky Adams who headed Joachim's effort off the goal line. As play settled down Darlington tried to break again, only to find Dave Challinor and Chris Brass in top form at the back for the visitors. Darlington went close again on 30 minutes when Conlon headed a Brian Close right-wing cross narrowly wide of Schmeichel's goal. Five minutes later Conlon played the ball through to Joachim, who looked certain to produce the opening goal, until Schmeichel raced out to deny the former Aston Villa striker. On 40 minutes the Bury goal again came under threat as Darlington defender Craig James found Martin Smith on the edge of the area. Smith's left-foot drive was inches wide of the target. In the second period both teams went close to breaking the deadlock. In the 55th minute Jon-Paul Pittman's 15-yard drive was superbly tipped over by Sam Russell. Moments later Darlington counter-attacked through Joachim, who bore down the right flank and crossed for Conlon, whose effort struck the crossbar with Schmeichel beaten. But the keeper reacted superbly to fingertip a follow up drive from Michael Cummins over the bar. The hosts took the lead in the 67th minute when Premiership referee Phil Dowd awarded a dubious penalty for handball against Challinor. Conlon struck the spot-kick hard and low into the bottom corner of the net which Schmeichel almost got a hand to. The visitors should have levelled just four minutes from time when Adams found himself clear in the box but Russell denied him with a great save.
