Martin Paterson's double sent Burnley through to the second round of the Carling Cup. The Northern Ireland international made it three in two games since his summer move from Scunthorpe, claiming a 40th minute opener before pouncing at the death to kill off a spirited second-half effort from Bury. Chris Eagles was eager to impress in front of his former Manchester United team-mates Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville - whose mother is Bury's club secretary - and he was the first to go close, heading over from Wade Elliott's third minute cross. Burnley looked the Championship outfit as they continued to press Bury back, but the hosts fashioned a good opening in the 12th minute with Brian Jensen denying Stephen Dawson after some neat footwork by Andy Bishop and Glynn Hurst on the edge of the box. Joey Gudjonsson then lashed a long-range free-kick narrowly over for Burnley, but Bury replied with Jensen having to tip over a stinging 20-yard strike from winger Elliott Bennett. Elliott hit the Bury crossbar with a wayward cross after linking well with Eagles and Paterson down the right, before Eagles fired wide in the 23rd minute after exchanging passes with Paterson. Robbie Blake sent a 20-yard drive narrowly wide as Burnley remained on top and the Clarets made the breakthrough shortly after. Left-back Christian Kalvenes sent a deep cross towards the back post for Paterson to turn home just moments after aiming a kick at Bury's David Buchanan. Bury centre-half Ben Futcher should have been closer to Paterson but almost made amends when he headed wide from Dawson's cross just before the break. Dawson fired inches wide on the turn just two minutes after the restart as the two teams struggled to get to grips with a second-half downpour. Bury gained some momentum though with Jensen saving from Bennett before producing a fine double save to deny Hurst and Bennett after Mike Jones broke down the right. Eagles produced some fine skill to knock the ball over Futcher in the 72nd minute and release Elliott, whose low cross was deflected just beyond Paterson at the far post. Bury replied with a Bennett shot deflected into the side-netting, while Eagles sent a 25-yard strike fizzing over the crossbar with ten minutes left. But Paterson sealed it in the 90th minute by converting the rebound after Wayne Brown had denied Eagles.
