Match Preview

Moore doubt for Burton

Burton have a handful of injury doubts as they prepare to get their League Two campaign under way against Football League newcomers Oxford.

Summer signing and newly-appointed captain Darren Moore has been nursing an Achilles problem following last weekend`s pre-season friendly against Kidderminster.

Full-back Kevin Grocott (thigh), midfielder Jacques Maghoma (ankle) and striker Greg Pearson (thigh) are also carrying knocks.

Nathan Stanton looks likely to make his debut at centre-half alongside Moore or Tony James, while goalkeeper Adam Legzdins, midfielders Adam Bolder Jack Dyer, Lewis Young and Garyn Preen and striker James Ellison are the other new arrivals hoping to force their way into manager Paul Peschisolido`s starting XI.

Long-term injury victims Ryan Austin (knee), Richard Jackson and Keith Gilroy are all nearing a return.

Oxford duo Simon Clist and Jake Wright have been declared fit.

Midfielder Clist has made a full recovery from a groin operation while defender Wright has got over a back problem, however it remains to be seen whether either make the starting XI.

The inclusion of Clist and Wright means manager Chris Wilder has virtually a full squad to choose from with defender Rhys Day being the only absentee as he continues his recovery from a knee problem.

Wilder faces a tough decision over who he chooses in goal to start the match at the Pirelli Stadium with 2009/10 Player of the Year Ryan Clarke and summer signing Simon Eastwood battling it out for the number one spot.

United's other 11 summer recruits including former Peterborough winger Alfie Potter, on loan Chelsea youngster Danny Philliskirk and ex-England Under-20 international Asa Hall are all available and will be hoping to make their debuts for the club.

Match Report

Us battle for point Oxford's return to the Football League after a four-year absence saw them take a hard-earned point in a goalless draw at Burton. Chris Wilder's side rarely looked like winning a frantic battle, although at times they played the more measured football. Both sides were guilty of playing poor final balls too often when they got themselves into promising situations, and it was a day for defenders to shine. Us defender Harry Worley was outstanding, as were Burton's new central defensive partnership - the vastly-experienced Darren Moore and Nathan Stanton. The best chances of the game fell to Burton striker Shaun Harrad in the first half. In the 32nd minute, Greg Pearson nipped past two players on the left-hand side of the box and rolled a pass across which Harrad stretched to touch goalwards, only for Ryan Clarke to save well low to his left. Picked out by fine pass from Adam Bolder in the 43rd minute, Harrad shot low from 20 yards and a deflection beat Clarke before the ball trickled past the keeper's right-hand post. No-one came closer in the second half, and it was the sort of game in which both teams were satisfied with a point.
