Live Commentary

90mins

Full-Time: BURNLEY 1-3 WIGAN. The final whistle goes and Burnley have been comprehensively beaten in this second half by a clinical Wigan side.

90mins

Alexander picks up a yellow card for a rather unnecessary foul.

90mins

Wigan are just keeping the ball in their own territory at the moment. Burnley don't seem to have the energy or the hunger to chase it down.

90mins

The 90 minutes are up. There will be plenty of stoppage time but I don't see a way back for Burnley.

88mins

Chris Eagles looked to be in a dangerous position as he was played in by Jordan put Titus Bramble closed him down quickly and really snuffed out the danger well. Kirkland picks up the loose ball in the box.

85mins

Wigan are obviously content to simply slow the game down now and try to see out the remaining moments. Burnley are trying to force their way back into the game but they seem to lack the self belief that they can get back into this one.

82mins

Kevin McDonald comes on for Andre Bikey.

81mins

Eagles delivers again towards the back post. Clarke Carlisle meets it with a looping header but it hits the top of the bar and Wigan are able to clear. Nothing going Burnley's way today it seems.

80mins

It's gone very quiet here at Turf Moor. Eagles wins a corner and Burnley really need a goal from this. Eagles swings it and wins another corner.

78mins

Paul Scharner comes off for Marlon King. He seemed to suffer a head injury with a collision with Clarke Carlisle at the corner that lead to the goal.

76mins

BURNLEY 1-3 WIGAN. Rodallega delivers the corner and it is flicked on at the near post by Scharner and BOYCE arrived on cue to smash the volley home and surely secure the three points for Wigan.

75mins

Mears makes a challenge in the box but then loses his bearings and Jordan has to come across to mop up the danger at the expense of a corner.

71mins

Steven Fletcher turns the ball into David Nugent but he cannot bring the ball down on his chest and eventually the chance was gone.

69mins

A frantic scramble in the Wigan box. Again Nugent heavily involved but the ball somehow managed to avoid the goal amidst all the bodies and I think it was Bramble who eventually cleared.

68mins

Nugent makes an immediate impact as he picks the ball up and runs down the left hand side. His cross breaks for Alexander but slightly off balance the skipper couldn't get enough power on the strike and Kirkland saves.

67mins

David Nugent will enter the action in place of Robbie Blake as Burnley switch to a 4-4-2 formation.

65mins

Andre Bikey comes forward and tries to test Kirkland with a shot from a way out but the save is a comfortable one for the former England international.

63mins

Wade Elliott has been pushed onto the right hand side it seems. Perhaps Owen Coyle wants to test N'Zogbia's defensive abilities at left-back after Figueroa's injury.

62mins

Clarke Carlisle goes into the book for unsporting behavior.

58mins

Burnley look rattled in possession after going behind but Elliott is still managing to find some space but the wide men and the full backs continue to lose possession.

54mins

Great chance to double the lead for Wigan as they break against the home side. Rodallega again involved as he played it into the path of N'Zogbia but the Frenchman fires the shot over the top from close range.

51mins

BURNELY 1-2 WIGAN. A long ball upfield is met by a tidy flick from Jason Scotland that finds the feet of RODALLEGA who comes back inside onto his right foot and fires the ball low and in off the left-hand post of Diego Penny's goal. Wigan lead!

50mins

Good pressure from Steven Fletcher as he hassles Bramble in possession and forces a mistake which ultimately leads to a Burnley corner.

47mins

Chris Eagles gets in behind N'Zogbia after a long ball upfield and skips inside Boyce but can only hit the side netting from inside the box. It was on his left-foot but he knows he should have put Burnley in-front.

46mins

The second half gets underway. Let's hope its better than the first.

45mins

Halftime: Burnley 1-1 Wigan. The first half comes to a close with somewhat of a whimper given the rapid start. The game struggled to adjust after the early injuries and the volume of free-kicks prevented any flow to the play.

45mins

Eagles comes off the left hand flank and plays the ball into Bikey who's shot is blocked into the path of Mears but as he looks to shoot the assistant's flag is raised and the offside denies Burnley the chance.

45mins

There will be six minutes of stoppage time in this first half. The injury to Jensen will have been heavily involved as well as the long treatment of Figueroa.

44mins

Fletcher takes on the Wigan defence on the edge of the box before slipping it back inside to Elliott who creates half a yard for himself and shoots but Kirkland has the effort easily covered.

41mins

Scharner takes possession from Elliott and plays the ball to Rodallega who knocks it into the path of Gomez. Gomez comes inside and looks to test Penny but the effort goes wide from range.

39mins

The game has become rather fragmented largely down to the apparently whistle happy Lee Mason who continues to blow for almost any physical challenge.

35mins

Slick interchange between Fletcher and Eagles and the frontman plays a neat flick into the path of Eagles but as he travels into the box Titus Bramble shows his experience and comes across to smother the danger.

33mins

Rodallega shows his pace down the right hand side as he steps away from Carlisle and pulls it back for Scotland but his shot is charged down just as it leaves his boot by Caldwell.

30mins

Wigan are struggling to piece together an attack of their own as Burnley start to regain their composure after losing Jensen.

28mins

Another injury in the game. Maynor Figueroa comes off and is replaced by Garcia Jordi Gomez.

26mins

Good link up play between Elliott and Fletcher and in the end he earns a free-kick after a late challenge from Diame. Elliott takes the free-kick quickly but cannot pick out a team-mate with the delivery and Wigan clear again.

22mins

Alexander finds Bikey who flicks the high ball on to Elliot. The midfielder looks to turn the ball out into the path of Blake as this Burnley attack builds momentum but Melchiot reads the play and steps in to take possession for Wigan.

19mins

Eagles wins Burnley their first corner of the game - Blake delivers and the ricochets put it behind for another corner. They work this one short and Elliott delivers and forces a real scramble in the six yard box but eventually Wigan clear it.

18mins

Warm applause from the home fans as Brian Jensen moves down into the tunnel. Hugo Rodallega picks the ball up a long way from goal but still opts to shoot but it canons off the back of Jason Scotland and out for a Burnley throw.

15mins

Diego Penny does come on to replace Brian Jensen who cannot continue after that injury.

13mins

Brian Jensen looks in some discomfort after the fall but he looks determined to continue. That's a soft goal to concede for the home side but there can be no complaints about Rodallega's decision to roll the ball into the net.

11mins

BURNLEY 1-1 WIGAN. A bizarre goal! A nothing ball that looks set to roll through to Jensen but the keeper slips and falls awkwardly as he tries to collect and RODALLEGA simply has to roll the ball into the unguarded net.

10mins

The corner comes in from the left hand side and swings deep to the back post and is met by Melchiot, unmarked, who heads it down towards the near post but Jensen makes a good stop with his feet to deny the Wigan man.

9mins

Jason Scotland turns towards the Burnley goal and into the box but Alexander makes the tackle. The ball breaks for Rodallega who shoots but Jensen turns it wide for the first corner of the game.

6mins

Well that early goal should certainly bring this game to life. A piece of magic from Robbie Blake to set up Fletcher and Burnley are buoyed by the early lead.

4mins

BURNLEY 1-0 WIGAN. A superb start for Burnley as Robbie Blake shows great feet on the left hand side to step away from Melchiot and cross to find STEVEN FLETCHER who finishes well from close range with an outstretched leg. Great play from Blake!

3mins

The opening exchanges are a little scrappy as both teams try to get control of the play.

1mins

Today's referee is Lee Mason and with a sharp blast on his whistle, the game gets underway.

0mins

Roberto Martinez's side are boosted by the returns to fitness of both Kirkland and Scharner and the pair start today. Jason Scotland will continue up-front alongside Hugo Rodallega with Charles N'Zogbia offering width from the left.

Hello and welcome to Turf Moor where Burnley, off the back of a 3-2 defeat away at Blackburn, play host to Wigan Athletic who haven't won since their victory over Chelsea three games ago.

Match Preview

Burnley face a second local derby in two games when Wigan Athletic are the visitors to Turf Moor on Saturday.

Last time out the Clarets suffered a 3-2 reverse at Blackburn Rovers, but back on home soil Owen Coyle's men will be full of confidence.

They have taken 12 points out of 12 at Turf Moor since returning to the top-flight, having beaten champions Manchester United, Everton, Sunderland and Birmingham City.

On the road they have lost all five games, leaving Coyle's men in mid-table, having started the campaign as the bookies' favourites for the drop.

Strikers Jay Rodriguez and Martin Paterson will both definitely miss out, but Coyle will be hopeful that Ecuadorian winger Fernando Guerrero can shake off a hamstring problem in time to feature.

The Latics are currently two points behind their hosts, having secured a 1-1 draw at home to Manchester City last time out.

Recently Roberto Martinez's men also defeated Chelsea at the DW Stadium, but their last away trip ended in a disappointing 2-1 defeat at lowly Hull City.

Martinez has made a positive impression since his summer arrival from Swansea City, but he may be without two key players for the weekend action.

Goalkeeper Chris Kirkland dislocated a finger against the Citizens, while Paul Scharner is struggling with a hip problem, but Martinez has no other injury doubts.

The Spaniard is upbeat for the coming months, having said after the draw with big-spending City: "I think we were the better side for the majority of the game, and the performance was worthy of three points.

"It's a little disappointing we didn't get the win but, on the other hand, it was great to see certain signs that our performances are getting stronger.

"If we continue playing like this, the results will come - I've no doubts over that."

Match Report

Burnley's 100 per cent home record in the Premier League came to an abrupt end against a well-organised and ultimately convincing Wigan Athletic side.

The Clarets started off brightly and had the tonic of an early goal when a quickly taken Wade Elliott throw-in found Robbie Blake, who delivered a low cross into the six-yard box for striker Steven Fletcher to convert via the underside of the crossbar.

Home goalkeeper Brian Jensen then produced two good saves to maintain Burnley's early lead, firstly when pushing a shot from Hugo Rodallega behind for a corner which then resulted in the goalkeeper producing a fine save to deny Mario Melchiot.

But there was a touch of farce about the Wigan equaliser as the Burnley defence were all at sea as Melchiot produced a ball to the far post, Jensen left his line, caught his studs in the turf and fell helplessly to the ground allowing Rodallega to tap the ball into an unguarded net. Moments later Jensen was replaced by Peruvian Diego Penny.

The game ultimately turned on a missed opportunity for the home side early in the second half when Chris Eagles could only fire into the side netting with goalkeeper Kirkland to beat.

That was to prove and expensive miss as striker Jason Scotland slid the ball into the path of Rodallega whose shot beat the diving Penny and went in off the far post.

The visitors made the game safe when Paul Scharner flicked on a corner at the near post for Emmerson Boyce to convert.

The nearest Burnley came to pulling a goal back was when central defender Clarke Carlisle headed against the top of the crossbar.

It's successive defeats for Owen Coyle's side and after their bright start to their first Premier League campaign, the ominous signs are that they face a long hard winter especially given the fact that they have yet to register a point away from Turf Moor.

For Roberto Martinez's team this win is confirmation that they have built on strong performances against Chelsea and Manchester City in recent weeks and on this form will pose a threat to any team in the division.
