Match Report

A goal from midfielder Johnnie Jackson ensured that visitors Colchester left Turf Moor with a precious point in their bid to avoid relegation from the Championship.

Colchester should have gone in front after 19 minutes when Kevin McLeod was allowed to pick out Clive Platt but the striker placed his side-footed volley against the post with Burnley goalkeeper Brian Jensen a spectator.

That proved an expensive miss as just three minutes later the home side went in front when Graham Alexander's long ball was not dealt with by central defender Chris Coyne allowing striker Andrew Cole to take full advantage on his first start for the Clarets.

Colchester suffered a further blow when striker Kevin Lisbie limped off to be replaced by the on-loan Scott Vernon.

A spell of Colchester possession ended with Jackson placing a shot into the arms of Jensen but the goalkeeper was given no chance on 37 minutes as Jackson's free-kick took a big deflection off the Burnley defensive wall to wrong-foot Jensen.

Burnley almost immediately restored their lead as Robbie Blake's free-kick beat goalkeeper Dean Gerken but bounced back off a post.

Substitute Vernon forced Jensen into an early second-half save but, as the home side were struggling to make any impression, manager Owen Coyle began to ring the changes with Steven Caldwell, Ade Akinbiyi and on-loan Arsenal youngster Mark Randall all making an appearance.

But, despite the change in personnel, chances remained at a premium although the home team almost snatched all three points deep into stoppage time when Akinbiyi seized on to a good ball from full-back Alexander only to pull his shot across the face of goal.

The result leaves Burnley stranded in mid-table but for Colchester they will need to turn draws into victories if they are to survive.
