Rovers low on numbers Bristol Rovers are struggling with a host of injury and suspension problems as they continue their battle against relegation with a home clash against Sheffield Wednesday. The Pirates saw three players limp off in the recent draw with Charlton and then had David McCracken sent off in the defeat at Bournemouth on Easter Monday. Midfielder Jeff Hughes (wrist) could miss the remainder of the season, while defenders James Tunnicliffe (ankle) and Danny Coles (Achilles) missed the trip to Dean Court and are likely to be sidelined again. Defender McCracken was dismissed for an elbow on Cherries defender Adam Smith and will miss the rest of the campaign. In a bid to boost the squad, caretaker manager Stuart Campbell has recalled versatile midfielder Charlie Clough from his loan spell at Bath. The 20-year-old featured 11 times for the Blue Square Bet Premier club, scoring twice. Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Madine is doubtful for his side's final away game of the season. Madine was forced out of Monday's home win over Swindon with a calf injury and manager Gary Megson is waiting for the results of a scan to determine the full extent of the injury. Should Madine fail to make it, Clinton Morrison and Paul Heffernan will be vying to start up front alongside the in-form Neil Mellor, who fired his 19th and 20th goals of the season against Swindon. Central defender Danny Batth, on loan from Wolves, sat out Monday's win through illness and remains doubtful, so Reda Johnson is expected to continue his partnership with Rob Jones at the heart of defence. Megson has no other new injury or suspension problems as his side chase a fifth win in seven matches.

Rovers all but relegated Bristol Rovers all but lost their battle for survival in a game decided by two soft penalties in a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday. Tommy Miller fired Wednesday ahead from the spot in the third minute after Danny Coles was adjudged to have brought down Gary Madine. But referee Dave Foster evened things up in the 11th minute with a harsh award against Lewis Buxton for his challenge on Wayne Brown and Will Hoskins equalised with a penalty that sneaked past Owls goalkeeper Nicky Weaver's dive. Knowing that relegation rivals Dagenham and Walsall were both winning, Rovers went for broke in the closing stages, but Weaver saved well from Chris Lines' free-kick and five minutes of stoppage time did not prove sufficient for the home side to snatch victory. A crowd of more than 8,000, including 1,600 Wednesday fans, had created a terrific atmosphere, but neither side could create many scoring chances. Weaver saved well from Hoskins in the 76th minute, but in the final analysis Rovers did not create enough chances and a win on the final day will not be enough as Walsall have a far superior goal difference.
