Struggling Brighton remain in the relegation zone despite collecting a precious point in a 1-1 draw with Burnley. The home side had much the better of things in the opening 45 minutes but were only in front courtesy of a header from striker Ade Akinbiyi - his first goal at Turf Moor since his £600,000 transfer. A combination of missed opportunities and fine goalkeeping from Alan Blayney ensured that the visitors remained in the game. The introduction of second-half substitute Jake Robinson proved inspirational as he caused the Burnley defence problems with an electrifying turn of pace. Brighton secured their point seven minutes into the second half when Dean Hammond converted a pull back form Paul Reid at the near post. Nobody epitomised Brighton's renewed vigour better than Hammond who, shortly after his goal, clipped the outside of the post with a header and then shot narrowly wide of the target as the Seagulls pressed for the extra two points which would make all the difference to their survival chances. Burnley were unable to demonstrate the attacking fluency which they had shown in the opening half, although Graham Branch was unfortunate to see his header tipped on to the crossbar by Blaney. The home side still had the best opportunity to win the game when, from a cross by Dean Bowditch, Akinbiyi fired wide of the target from only eight yards. "We caused ourselves some problems in the second half," said Burnley boss Steve Cotterill. "But give full credit to them. They made it a game and had a go in the second half but we are disappointed not to have collected all three points." Brighton boss Mark McGhee said: "The important thing was to take something out of the game. "If we win one game I think we will stay up. I don't think drawing two games will be enough. We will need another three points." McGhee tore into his side at the interval. "I had a bit of a rant at half time at one or two players as we didn't get close enough to them. "We were unlucky not to win the game in the second half." Brighton have now gone eight games without a win, but if they can maintain the fighting spirit which was demonstrated in the second half, the south coast club might just avoid the drop.
