Match Preview

Trio back in contention Adam El-Abd, Ashley Barnes and Jamie Smith are all available for Brighton's clash with Sheffield Wednesday. Defender El-Abd (hamstring) and striker Barnes (ankle) have missed the last three weeks through injury but are ready to return to the squad. Midfielder Smith is also back in full training after 11 weeks on the sidelines with a metatarsal problem, although boss Gus Poyet is unlikely to rush him back at the weekend. Therefore, full-back Jim McNulty (ankle) is the only injury absentee as the leaders head into the final stages of the season. Six points from the home games against the Owls and Dagenham next Tuesday night could be enough to clinch promotion if results elsewhere go the Seagulls' way. Gary Megson has no fresh injury concerns as Sheffield Wednesday travel south. Consecutive home wins against Colchester and Tranmere helped alleviate the pressure on the Owls boss and he may stick to a winning formula. Loanee Rob Jones will be hoping to change the manager's plans as he becomes available after suffering concussion. The defender, who signed from Scunthorpe last month, missed both victories at Hillsborough but is back in contention. Goalkeeper Nicky Weaver recently signed a new two-year deal but will continue to watch from the stands after being sidelined with a groin injury, meaning youngster Richard O'Donnell will deputise once more. Giles Coke's first-half strike gave Wednesday a 1-0 victory when they met Gus Poyet's side in August.

Match Report

Seagulls edge closer Brighton moved closer to promotion with a goal in each half from Chris Wood and Elliott Bennett securing a 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday and their 11th successive home win. Wood, on loan from West Brom, broke the deadlock a minute before the break with a well-taken penalty after defender Daniel Batth pulled Glenn Murray to the ground. Bennett sealed the victory in emphatic style with an unstoppable drive from the edge of the area 16 minutes from time after good work by Spanish defender Inigo Calderon. The Seagulls finished with 10 men following the sending-off in the last minute of skipper Gordon Greer, who received a straight red card following an off-the-ball incident. Lively winger Bennett was almost on target again when he shot just wide late on.
