Match Preview

Sparrow back for Gulls Matt Sparrow returns to the Brighton squad for the home clash with Brentford. The midfielder missed Saturday's 2-1 win over Oldham with a groin injury but has been passed fit to face the Bees. Boss Gus Poyet therefore has a strong squad to choose from with Alan Navarro the only absentee as he continues his recovery from cruciate ligament damage. The clash will be Brighton's fourth match in 10 days so Poyet must decide whether to rest on-loan Newcastle winger Kazenga LuaLua, who has been playing despite a hamstring problem. Albion have taken 13 points from their last five matches and hit the top of the table following Saturday's success. Brentford manager Andy Scott will stick with Gary Alexander and Charlie MacDonald in attack. Fellow strikers Carl Cort (Achilles) and Nicky Forster (stomach) are fit again and came off the bench during Friday night's defeat at Leyton Orient. But Scott is keeping faith in his first-choice front two despite seeing his side slip back into the League One relegation zone. Summer signing Kirk Hudson made his debut as a substitute against Orient following a groin problem and should be involved again. Huddersfield loanee Robbie Simpson is still struggling with a hamstring injury and midfielder David Hunt remains on the sidelines with damaged ankle ligaments.

Match Report

Lualua strikes late for Seagulls Kazenga Lualua's late goal gave top-of-the-table Brighton their fourth successive home league win over struggling Brentford. The winger, on loan from Newcastle, cracked home his second goal for Brighton 12 minutes from time from the edge of the area following a corner by Elliott Bennett. Moments before Brentford keeper Ben Hamer had brilliantly denied substitute Glenn Murray as the Seagulls stepped up the pressure. Brighton had a let off immediately after the break when Sam Wood's left-foot shot rebounded off the crossbar. The Seagulls - now unbeaten in six league games - had a strong penalty appeal waved away when defender Craig Woodman appeared to pull back Ashley Barnes midway through the second half. At the halfway point of the first half, keeper Hamer parried a volley from Bennett before Bees striker Nicky Forster headed wastefully wide at the far post following a cross from Myles Weston. Hamer came to his side's rescue after 35 minutes by brilliantly turning a shot from Matt Sparrow around the post.
