Simpson worry for Bees Robbie Simpson faces a late fitness test ahead of Brentford's home meeting with Hartlepool. The on-loan Huddersfield striker missed last weekend's goalless draw at Bristol Rovers with a hamstring strain and the Bees are hopeful he will return. Defender Pim Balkestein will also be checked over after breaking his nose against Rovers. The Dutchman underwent an operation on Tuesday and is set to play in a protective mask for the next month. Leon Legge or David McCracken will push for recalls if Balkestein is ruled out. Midfielder David Hunt misses out after a scan revealed he has suffered torn ankle ligaments which will sideline him for around four weeks. Summer signing Kirk Hudson is still building up his fitness following a groin injury. Hartlepool will give Jake Kean his debut after Scott Flinders sustained a hand injury in training. Flinders will visit a specialist to determine the extent of the problem, but youngster Kean, on loan from Blackburn, will definitely start. James Brown will also miss out despite returning to training following an ankle injury. Brown has not featured in either of Pools` previous two games and looks set to miss out again despite receiving round the clock treatment in an attempt to be fit in time. Ritchie Humphreys may continue to fill the void left by Brown and Fabian Yantoro should continue to fill in for Joe Gamble who will also miss out on the trip to London after failing to recover from the ankle injury that has kept him out for two games. Neil Austin is likely to continue at full back after getting through 90 minutes against Exeter on his first appearance since the opening day of the season.

Bees fail to sting Pools Toothless Brentford had to settle for a point in a dire goalless draw against a rugged Hartlepool outfit. Both sides missed a string of chances to bring spark to the game which was dominated by the two defences. The closest either came to a breakthrough was when Pools defender Gary Liddle fired against the inside of the upright only to see his effort cleared to safety. Bees striker Charlie MacDonald went close midway through the first half but was denied by the onrushing keeper Jake Kean. His forward partner Gary Alexander was also denied by the on-loan Blackburn stopper with a bullet header at the far post. After the break Anthony Sweeney saw a 30-yard drive flash just past the angle and the same man had a chance to wrap it up for the visitors with four minutes left but fired straight at keeper Ben Haymer. Substitute Nicky Forster could have clinched the three points for the hosts in the 90th minute but his volley drifted wide of the far post. Deep into injury time Brentford knew it would not be their day when Sam Saunders curled a free kick by the upright.
