Match Report

Tranmere Rovers made the most of dreadful conditions to secure their first league victory in six matches.

Bournemouth went to the bottom of the table with their fifth away reverse and their manager Kevin Bond questioned whether the game should have gone ahead.

Mistakes were frequent on a rain-sodden surface.

Tranmere took 23 minutes to go ahead. Calvin Zola chipped keeper Gareth Stewart after Cherries captain Paul Telfer made a hash of trying to clear a through ball from Jennison Myrie-Williams.

The Merseysiders doubled their lead from the penalty spot in the 27th minute. Chris Greenacre was the marksman with a well-struck shot after Warren Cummings tripped Myrie-Williams.

Tranmere created other good chances without being able to take advantage up to half-time.

Brett Pitman fired over from 12 yards for Bournemouth early on and Alex Pearce headed over following a 30th minute free-kick.

Bournemouth tried hard to get back in to contention early in the second half, but were denied by two excellent saves by home keeper Danny Coyne, the first from James Henry in the 52nd minute and the second from substitute Marvin Bartley.

Tranmere resumed control. Ben Chorley headed onto the top of the net before Myrie-Williams was denied by a goal-line block from Cummings.

But the Merseysiders made it 3-0 in the 64th minute with an easy tap-in by Steve Jennings from a Zola cross.

Excellent work by Stewart denied Shane Sherriff and Paul McLaren before Bournemouth were gifted a consolation in the 76th minute following a poor backpass by Ian Goodison.

Coyne did manage to get in a kick at the ball, but it struck Pitman and rebounded to Sam Vokes, who had the easiest of chances to find the target.

Jennings and Myrie-Williams were excellent for the winners. Henry worked hard for Bournemouth and Dominic Shimmin also did well before making way for the closing minutes.
