Brett Pitman climbed off the bench to ensure Bournemouth's first home league win of the season with an injury-time goal. Darlington had only themselves to blame for the way they gave Bournemouth two early goals, but there was no doubt about Pitman's 15-yard strike from a pass by another replacement, Josh McQuoid. Darlington's first defensive blunder occurred in the 15th minute when their captain, Steve Foster, was guilty of a lazy pass across the defence, which was intercepted by Bournemouth skipper Jeff Goulding. Goulding's shot was blocked by Steve Brown but the rebound fell into the path of Marvin Bartley who made mistake. Sammy Igoe, so influential in midfield for Bournemouth, should have added a second in the 28th minute but mis-kicked after being set-up by a left-wing centre from Warren Cummings. Darren Anderton almost added another in the 34th minute with a shot from 20 yards, but Brown dived to his left to save. Darlington were level in the 35th minute with a looping header from Liam Hatch. But Bournemouth were soon back in control and took the lead two minutes later. This time Alan White was at fault with a bad pass in a dangerous position and, although Igoe failed to get a shot on target, the ball fell to Darlington full-back Neil Austin, who diverted the shot into the corner of his own net. Referee Clive Penton failed to re-appear for the second half because of a hamstring injury and his replacement, Richard Martin, booked six players in a hectic period. Blair Sturrock should have made the game safe for Bournemouth in the 76th minute when he ran clear onto a pass from Igoe, but dragged his shot wide. But Bournemouth made the game safe in the three minutes added by substitute referee Martin as Pitman lashed home his second of the season.
