Match Report

A goal seven minutes from time by 18-year-old defender Jamie Stevens kept Boston United's survival hopes alive with a 1-0 win against Chester.

His close range header was enough to seal victory over 10-man City who have now won only one of their last 12 games.

Neither side showed any great levels of composure in the opening moments with only a ballooning 25-yard free kick from Boston's Jamie Clarke offering a token threat.

In the 14th minute Boston launched a more concerted attack but Francis Green shot tamely wide after cutting in from the right.

Boston missed a golden chance to take an 18th-minute lead when Clarke saw a penalty turned aside by John Danby after Kevin Sandwith had handled on the line to keep out a Paul Ellender header - his offence leading to a straight red card.

After that the game drifted into a phase of defences being in control and little in the way of goal mouth action.

Boston pressed again in the 41st minute with a neat build up down the right culminating in Brad Maylett threading a pass through for David Galbraith to see a shot on the turn blocked at the expense of a corner.

Boston had another chance four minutes after the interval when, following a Galbraith cross from a short corner, the ball dropped for Clarke to fire inches too high from 25 yards.

All the time little was seen of Chester as an attacking force with the 10-man visitors opting to leave only Simon Yeo on as a loan striker.

Boston tried to lift the tempo and in the 63rd minute Green stabbed wide at full stretch from a left-wing cross by David Farrell.

Six minutes later the home side went agonisingly close again. Mark Greaves rose to meet a Clarke corner but the ball dropped inches past the far post.

Finally Boston broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute when Galbraith delivered a fizzing corner from the right and Stevens glanced in a near post close range header.

Boston almost doubled the lead moments later when, after Green's shot had been blocked, Maylett fired too high from the edge of the area.
