A deflected goal gave managerless Chester City the points to virtually secure their Football League status. The game looked to be heading for a draw until Ryan Lowe's strike 14 minutes from time was deflected past stranded Boston keeper Nathan Abbey. The visitors had taken the lead in the ninth minute when a cross from the right was dummied by Jason Lee, giving David Noble the simple task of sidefooting home. A free-kick from the edge of the box, after Paul Ellender had cynically brought down Ben Davies, gave Lowe an opportunity for a strike on goal and his free-kick forced Abbey into a save at full-stretch. Lowe then hit the side-netting on 34 minutes, and a minute later Robbie Booth flashed a header a foot wide as Chester put Boston on the back foot. Deep in first-half stoppage time, Chester's pressure paid off as they drew level when a clever back-heel by Lowe sent Booth clear, and the youngster made no mistake with an assured finish. Within two minutes of the restart Boston wasted a glorious chance when Brad Maylett crossed to Jermaine Easter, who was only four yards from goal, but his downward header was wastefully wide of the mark. Lee did manage to put the ball in the net for the visitors on 55 minutes, only for the referee to rule offside. At the other end Lowe let the visitors off the hook when he put a volley wide from close range after he had been set up with an easy chance. The wicked deflection allowed Chester to steal the points, with Lowe's free-kick looking unlikely to trouble Abbey until it took a deflection off Chris Holland, giving the keeper no chance.
