Match Preview

Manzano ready for must-win clash Sevilla begin life under new coach Gregorio Manzano with a tough trip to in-form Borussia Dortmund as the Andalusian side look to give their Europa League dreams a much-needed shot in the arm. Former Real Mallorca boss Manzano took over the reins at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan after Antonio Alvarez was fired following Sunday's 2-0 defeat to promoted Hercules in La Liga. Although that was Sevilla's first league defeat of the campaign, it came hot on the heels of some disappointing European results, which saw last season's Copa del Rey winners knocked out of the Champions League play-offs by Braga and then lose 1-0 to Paris St Germain in their opening Group J match in the Europa League. With that defeat to PSG in mind, Sevilla sporting director Monchi said of the match: "It's an important game. If we don't get the three points or a good result it will be a major setback, not definitive, but obviously it will be difficult for us (to qualify)." Therefore, Manzano, who led Mallorca to a fifth-placed finish in the Primera Division last term, finds himself thrown straight in at the deep end against a Dortmund side in red-hot form. Dortmund have won their last four matches in Europe, including a last-gasp 4-3 win over Karpaty Lviv in their first group game. Jurgen Klopp's team are on a seven-match winning streak in all competitions, and they are second in the Bundesliga table having defeating St Pauli 3-1 at the weekend. Manzano, who warned at his presentation on Monday against expecting instant results, saying "I'm not the Wizard of Oz", has included the fit-again Jesus Navas in his travelling party. The Spain winger suffered an injury during the defeat to PSG a fortnight ago but was included in a 20-man squad. Klopp believes that, despite their current problems, Sevilla, UEFA Cup winners in 2006 and 2007, are not a team to be taken lightly. "They have had the biggest continental successes in recent times, they have the most experience and they are full of top-class players in the league of the world champions," he said. Goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller added: "They are an opponent who you normally face in the Champions League. "We are totally motivated, want to give Sevilla as good as we get and continue on our successful path in the Europa League." Dortmund will be without Sebastian Kehl, Dede, Mohamed Zidan, Florian Kringe and Tamas Hajnal through injury, while Patrick Owomoyela is a doubt with an ankle problem.

Match Report

Sevilla edge past Dortmund Sevilla earned their first victory in Europa League Group J with a hard-fought 1-0 win at 10-man Borussia Dortmund. Sevilla went ahead through Luca Cigarini with a goal two minutes into first half stoppage-time, before the hosts were reduced to 10 men in the 50th minute when Marcel Schmelzer was given his second yellow card. Both teams are on three points after two games in the group. Dortmund started with much more ball possession but the Germans struggled to outwit the Sevilla offside trap. The first notable chance came in the 26th minute when Lucas Barrios' header required Sevilla goalkeeper Andres Palop to make a fine save. The Spaniards did not really pressure Dortmund's goal much through Luis Fabiano's long flat shot went just wide left 10 minutes before the break. Dortmund pushed forward wave after wave but Palop again stopped Barrios in superb fashion in the 43rd minute. But it was Sevilla who grabbed the lead just before the break when Cigarini blasted home from 10 yards out after Martin Caceres' header from Tiberio Guarente's free-kick had been cleared by Neven Subotic. Dortmund were reduced to 10 men five minutes after the restart when referee Mike Dean showed Schmelzer his second yellow card of the night, somewhat harshly for apparent simulation. The match began to get out of the control of Dean, who drew the yellow card out of his pocket three more times in the next eight minutes. The contest settled down and the first chance of the second half went to Alexis, whose header went just wide of the far right post for Sevilla with 22 minutes to play. Shinji Kawaga was through the Sevilla backline but struck the post in the 70th minute for Dortmund, then Fabiano headed just wide a minute later at the other end. The hosts' push in the 89th minute nearly resulted in the equaliser but Caceres cleared Mats Hummels' header at the line. Dortmund's next Europa League match is October 21 at home against Paris St Germain while Sevilla head to Karpaty Lviv.
