Match Preview

Bolton Wanderers face the daunting prospect of hosting a Liverpool side with two defeats against their name already this season.

Rafael Benitez's side have lost the same amount of games they lost in the Premier League throughout the whole of last season after demoralising losses at Tottenham Hotspur on the opening weekend then at their fortress Anfield home where Aston Villa exposed their defensive frailties on Monday night.

If the Reds are to be considered genuine title contenders this term they need to be winning at the likes of Bolton to keep the pressure on the likely top trio of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Liverpool have injury concerns as the look to get back to winning ways. New signing Alberto Aquilani (ankle) is still sidelined as he waits to make his debut. Daniel Agger (back) and Fabio Aurelio (knee) are also out of contention.

Fernando Torres has scored two goals from his three Premier League games so far and this will please Benitez, but the defeats must stop.

Gary Megson's Bolton outfit will be out to add more misery to Benitez and he will be buoyed by their 1-0 midweek Carling Cup success at Tranmere Rovers.

However, the Premier League is the Trotters' bread and butter and with many believing the Reebok Stadium-based club will struggle to retain their position for next season, Megson is out to prove them wrong.

Their start to this campaign hasn't helped detract the doubters after suffering 1-0 defeats against Sunderland and Hull City.

With powerful forward Kevin Davies and the classy, yet goal-shy Johan Elmander still to flourish, Megson will be looking to his frontmen to strike fear into Liverpool's backline.

Liverpool have looked susceptible under aerial threats so far this term and the physical presence of Davies is surely to be thrust upon Jamie Carragher and his colleagues.

Bolton remain without the injured pair of Ricardo Gardner (hamstring) and Andy O'Brien (groin) ahead of the weekend clash.

Last season Liverpool held the upper hand over Bolton winning 2-0 at the Reebok Stadium with Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard both scoring headers to take all three points to Merseyside.

The return fixture last Boxing Day saw Spaniard Albert Riera open the scoring before a Robbie Keane brace sealed a 3-0 success.

Match Report

Captain Steven Gerrard was once again Liverpool's hero as he grabbed an 83rd-minute winner to sink brave Bolton Wanderers 3-2 at the Reebok Stadium.

Ten-man Wanderers looked to have held on for a valuable point only for the inspirational Reds skipper to pop up and save Rafa Benitez's blushes late on.

After losing two of their opening three games, Liverpool were desperate to get back to winning ways, but found themselves a goal down when Kevin Davies bundled home Matt Taylor's 33rd-minute corner.

Liverpool hit back eight minutes later when Gerrard's corner was cleared to Glen Johnson on the edge of the area and the full-back fired home through a crowd of players for his second goal of the season.

Wanderers could have been back in front on the stroke of half-time but for a brilliant save from Jose Reina, who tipped over Taylor's free-kick.

The hosts did regain their advantage two minutes after the restart when the Reds' brittle defence failed to deal with another set-piece.

This time it was keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen's long free-kick forward and Tamir Cohen latched on to Davies' flick-on to blast the Trotters back in front.

But any hopes of Bolton holding on for a famous win disappeared when Sean Davis was harshly sent off for his second booking for a trip on Lucas on 54 minutes.

Fernando Torres, who missed a succession of good chances, immediately took advantage of the extra man as he ran on to Dirk Kuyt's knock down to equalise on 56 minutes.

Liverpool piled forward in search of a winner, which eventually came when Gerrard, who had earlier rattled the crossbar, crashed home a superb volley with seven minutes left.

The Reds could have added a fourth but for a brilliant save from Jaaskelaien to deny Torres late on.
