Blackburn will be wanting to provide boss Sam Allardyce, whose doctors have told him he can't even watch this clash on TV due to a heart problem, with a reason to smile but Bolton will be desperate to improve their recent poor form

Match Preview

Bolton Wanderers face a north-west derby against Blackburn at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday with Rovers boss Sam Allardyce making another return to his former club.

'Big Sam' was revered by the Trotters faithful before making a move to Newcastle United.

This move didn't go to plan and following his dismissal, he returned to football with Blackburn and he will be able to use his inside knowledge of the club to his benefit this weekend.

Bolton, under the stewardship of Gary Megson, are plodding on in the Premier League and sit in 16th place and precariously just one point above the relegation places.

They have another chance to rectify their shocking home form this term.

With just one win from their first six and 13 conceded - a league high - this poor return must turn around if they are to avoid a battle at the foot of the table.

Blackburn themselves are in an even bigger catastrophe on the road having lost five on the spin.

They have conceded a mammoth 18 goals in this time and notched just three, although Arsenal hammered them 6-2 and Chelsea recorded a 5-0 to dent their goal difference.

It would seem something has to give this weekend and it is a tough game to call.

Megson will be without Tamir Cohen (groin), Sean Davis and Joey O'Brien (both knee), while Dan Shittu and Mustapha Riga (both hamstring) are facing a race against time to make the squad.

Allaradyce has the luxury of an almost full-strength squad to choose from.

Match Report

Sam Allardyce's Blackburn Rovers players gave their absent manager something to cheer about as they claimed their first away points of the season at Bolton Wanderers.

The Rovers boss will have heart surgery this week and was not at the game to see his team continue their Reebok hoodoo over his former club.

David Dunn's superb 32nd-minute opener and a Sam Ricketts own goal after half-time mean Wanderers have now not beaten their derby rivals at home in ten attempts.

Matt Taylor wasted a great chance to give the hosts the lead when he failed to convert Gavin McCann's cross on 13 minutes.

At the other end, Gael Givet headed over Jussi Jaaskelainen, but Gary Cahill got back to clear off the goal-line.

Taylor then saw his 30-yard free-kick deflect off Ryan Nelsen's outstretched leg and crash against the crossbar on 31 minutes.

And less than 60 seconds later Blackburn were ahead. Paul Robinson's long throw sent Franco di Santo sprinting away down the right. He picked out Jason Roberts, who played it into Dunn's path and the midfielder curled his shot beautifully into the top corner.

Taylor wasted another great opportunity on the stroke of half-time when he inexplicably headed over McCann's corner from two yards out.

El Hadji Diouf nearly came back to haunt his former club immediately after the restart, but McCann did superbly to head his volley off the line.

Blackburn surged forward in search of a second goal and Jaaskelainen denied di Santo before McCann was forced to clear off his own line again, this time from a Roberts header.

But Rovers went further ahead on 73 minutes when Ricketts headed Brett Emerton's crossfield ball into an empty net after Jaaskelainen had come rushing from his line in a dreadful mix-up.
