Match Report

Sunderland return to action against Bolton Wanderers having being given a lesson in the harsh realities of the Premier League on Boxing Day.

The Black Cats produced plenty of effort and commitment against Manchester United, but were ultimately taken apart by the champions in a 4-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light.

The result - which stretched their winless streak to four games - left the Wearsiders languishing in the relegation zone and Keane critical of his side's defensive frailties.

"It was a harsh lesson for everyone," he said. "United have good players, good movement, good touch and they punish you when you make a mistake.

"If anyone says that we were comfortable losing 4-0 at home to United then they're mistaken. We're in a sticky patch - a massive, massive fight without a doubt."

Keane handed a surprise debut to teenage forward Martyn Waghorn and the youngster responded with a composed display.

However, Dwight Yorke, Grant Leadbitter and Kieran Richardson are pushing for recalls and may get their chance at the weekend.

At the back, Nyron Nosworthy (hamstring) and Russell Anderson (ankle) remain absent from a defence which has conceded 16 goals in the last six games.

Bolton's form under new manager Gary Megson continues to fluctuate with last weekend's 3-0 victory over Birmingham City being followed by a 2-0 defeat at Everton on Boxing Day.

The result of such inconsistency is their current 15th place in the league table where they remain just three points clear of the drop zone.

After the defeat at Goodison Park, Megson claimed 'nothing went for his side on the day' but, despite their upturn in fortunes since he replaced Sammy Lee at the helm in October, the Trotters are still a long way from safety.

Megson named an unchanged line-up against Everton, but Jlloyd Samuel and Gavin McCann replaced Ivan Campo and Danny Guthrie midway through the match and could earn starting spots at the weekend.

Nicolas Anelka had a rare off-day but will keep his place on what could reportedly be his farewell appearance for Wanderers with stories continuing to link the France striker with a move to Chelsea when the transfer window reopens on Tuesday.

Last time the two sides met at the Stadium of Light, the game ended in a goalless draw, while at the Reebok Stadium in the 2005-06 season it was Wanderers who ran out comfortable 2-0 winners.
