Match Report

Torquay's late season form could yet keep them in League One.

A fourth successive victory - they have taken 17 points out of the last 20 - means that a point at Colchester next Saturday will guarantee them staying up no matter what happens elsewhere.

MK Dons' 3-0 win at Peterborough stopped Torquay celebrating their safety in front of Plainmoor's biggest gate of the season.

They were always too good for mid-table Blackpool.

Leading scorer Adebayo Akinfenwa, who later collected the player of the year award, settled Torquay's nerves with his 16th goal of the season in the 16th minute. He flicked home a perfect left-wing cross by Craig Woodman.

In the 36th minute Lee Jones kept Blackpool in the match with an acrobatic tip over from Akinfenwa after a brilliant seven-man move.

Blackpool played with only target man John Murphy upfront until the second half and seldom posed much threat.

Torquay's clincher came in the 54th minute.

Woodman broke up a Blackpool attack and set Akinfenwa and midfielder Alex Russell on a sweeping counter attack which finished with Russell shooting under Jones from 15 yards.

Torquay keeper Andy Marriott had a quiet afternoon as Torquay slipped into cruise control in the last half hour.

He kept out one Paul Edwards chip in the 60th minute and three minutes from time, produced a brave double save from Blackpool substitutes Matt Shaw and Ciaran Donnelly.

Torquay took off right winger Martin Phillips and their playmaker Russell in the closing stages, both players leaving to standing ovations.

The Gulls now know one point from their final match of the season at Colchester will be enough to guarantee survival.
