Match Preview

Allardyce faces up to relegation battle Sam Allardyce admits that Blackburn have already been dragged into a relegation fight even though it is only the start of November. Rovers are currently third-from-bottom of the Premier League and the Blackburn boss says his side cannot afford any more slip-ups - starting at home to Wigan. Allardyce believes Blackburn have been guilty of throwing points away unneccessarily in at least two matches this season and says that cannot continue. The Blackburn manager said: "We are already dragged in to a relegation scrap because it is very difficult to make up the points that you have dropped, it's hugely difficult to start catching up. "For example against Birmingham we should have had three points that day and if we had, then we would be in mid-table. "We threw three points away on that day and look where we are now, and we can ill-afford to do that again. "In many ways we have thrown a point away last week as we should have had at least a draw against Chelsea and we ended up throwing that away in the last four minutes." El Hadji Diouf and Martin Olsson are doubts after both picked up knocks in training and will have fitness tests before the game. Gael Givet and Benjani, who suffered minor injuries in the defeat by Chelsea, are in contention however. Meanwhile, Roberto Martinez believes the intensity of the derby clash could spark his Wigan team back into life. Martinez felt Latics were starting to make encouraging progress before going down to a disappointing 2-0 loss at Fulham last weekend. That defeat ended a six-game unbeaten in all competitions and left Wigan 17th in the Barclays Premier League. Martinez is viewing the result as a glitch and expects his men to bounce back as they travel the short distance to Ewood Park to face the side immediately below them. The Spaniard said: "Now is a great moment to react. "It is a great opportunity to get rid of that feeling we were left with on Saturday and make sure we carry on with the good work we showed in October. "We have played a few derbies now. Even in the Carling Cup when we played Preston, you could feel the excitement in the fans. "It is something that comes through to the players and you can feel that building up to the game. "Ewood Park is a really tough place to go, they have found a way that is very effective. "They are on the back of a really good performance against Chelsea when they didn't get any rewards. "We are coming on the back of a disappointing performance after doing well for six weeks. "There are many ingredients to make it a really tough game but it would mean so much to perform well and get the points." Martinez must decide whether the game is one for highly-rated youngster Tom Cleverley, who is on a season-long loan from Manchester United, in midfield. The 20-year-old made his full debut at Craven Cottage having made three previous substitute appearances. Martinez said: "It is really exciting to see a player like Tom with the potential he has got. "Already he has a real understanding of the game, real quality. "I thought he brought a lot to us at Fulham. He was one of the positive notes. "He will carry on developing, carry on getting stronger and better. "He is going to bring a lot to Wigan Athletic over the next few months." Martinez will also consider giving striker Mauro Boselli an opportunity. Wigan are again without defender Emmerson Boyce, who is likely to be sidelined for another 10 days with a hamstring injury. Midfielder James McCarthy is now beginning a rehabilitation expected to last around three months after undergoing ankle surgery this week.

Match Report

Roberts bounces back to sink Latics Blackburn substitute Jason Roberts atoned for the error which had cost his side dear against Chelsea last weekend with a cool 66th-minute finish to help seal a 2-1 win against Wigan at Ewood Park. Roberts had missed a sitter against the champions but kept his nerve to supply a superb first-time finish to Brett Emerton's cross and wrap up victory. Morten Gamst Pedersen had put Rovers in front eight minutes earlier when his free-kick from the byline eluded everyone in the box and curled into the top corner. And despite Charles N'Zogbia reducing the deficit for Wigan with a 74th-minute free-kick, the visitors failed to muster another chance to snatch a vital point. Last week's stirring but ultimately fruitless performance against Chelsea seemed a distant memory in a tepid first period which quickly seemed destined to finish goalless. The home side's early chances came from Christopher Samba at set-pieces, while Wigan spurned the few chances they had, slamming two free-kicks into the Rovers wall. N'Zogbia showed a flash of skill to burst into he box where he was dispossessed by Gael Givet, while at the other end Ali Al Habsi flapped at a Pedersen free-kick. Mame Biram Diouf had the best early chance when he was played clear by Pedersen, only for the Wigan goalkeeper to burst from his goal and dive bravely at the striker's feet. The more entertaining action came on the touchline where former Wigan defender Pascal Chimbonda was relishing the taunts of the visiting fans at the Darwen End. Wigan had their first real shot on target in the 31st minute when Rodallega burst through on the left and hit a left-foot shot which Paul Robinson saved well. And as the visitors ended the half strongly, Rovers had a lucky escape in the 38th minute when N'Zogbia barged through to put the ball in the net, only to be pulled up for a foul on Pedersen. The visitors continued in the ascendancy at the start of the second period with N'Zogbia serving up fine crosses which Hugo Rodallega and Steve Gohouri failed to convert. But Al Habsi had to perform heroics to keep his side level in the 49th minute when Pedersen met Brett Emerton's deep cross from the right and the goalkeeper made a superb reaction save. Rovers grabbed the lead in the 58th minute when Pedersen's free-kick from out on the right touchline evaded everyone and curled into the top corner past a helpless Al Habsi. The visitors had a half-hearted penalty appeal turned down when Rodallega tripped over Givet, but Rovers went further ahead in the 66th minute when Emerton crossed from the right and Roberts beat the offside trip to slide home. Wigan still looked lively and reduced their deficit when N'Zogbia drilled a low free-kick in off Robinson's left-hand post in the 74th minute. Rodallega's effort from an N'Zogbia cross was blocked in the box but Wigan failed to muster any further chances and gave the home side a comfortable last quarter of an hour. Rovers should have extended their winning margin deep into injury time when Chimbonda crossed to David Dunn, but he contrived to slice wide the simplest of chances.
